RATIONALE

Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus), locally known as pipino, is a member of

Cucurbitaceae plant family that is produced widely because of high source of nutrients

content like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. (Ene et al., 2016). Cucumber is an

important vegetable crop (Stepien and Klobus 2006).

Cucumber is a warm temperature vine vegetable and it is grown widely in the

Philippines all year around, and its production has increased with an average annual

rate of 2.79% from 2003 to 2017 (Knoema, 2018). The demand of cucumbers, as well

as gherkins, in the country is continuing to rise as food manufactures, such as Uniliver,

use this crop as main ingredient of one of their leading products, the Lady’s Choice

Mayonnaise and Spreads.

Cucumbers, Cucumis sativus L. (Cucurbitaceae), are among the most widely

grown vegetable crops the world over. Economically cucumbers are very important, as

cucumbers contain high nutritional, medicinal as well as health beneficial values. In

present presentation going to discussed about the economic importance of cucumber

(Cucumis sativus). Cucumber is healthy fruit which having lots of benefits. Cucumber

regulates hydration and maintain adequate blood pressure and sugar, soothes skin,

helped in digestion and reduces fat and help weight loss. ( IntecOpen, 2021)

1
General Objectives

To evaluate the cucumber production at Purok Sampaguita, Bagong Silang,

Maragusan, Davao de Oro using seaweed fertilizer.

Specific Objectives

1. To distinguish the yield and profitability of Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus) using

seaweed fertilizer.

2. To distinguish the Return on Investment (ROI) of producing 1,000 square meter

area of Nacio’s Cucumber Production Enterprise.

2
DESCRIPTION OF THE ENTERPRISE

Business Description

The cucumber production was known as Nacio's Cucumber Production, owned

and manage by the project manager Mr. Cesar Jade T. Ignacio, a student of Davao De

Oro State College Maragusan Branch student. The project start on November 10, 2022

up to April 22, 2022, at Purok Sampaguita, Bagong Silang, Maragusan, Davao de Oro.

The total production area was 1000 square meters with 40 plots and each per plot with

2,000 seeds planted.

Science and Technology

Seaweed extract also enhances crop yields, promotes plant resilience to frost and

disease, stimulates inorganic ingredient intake from the soil, improves stress

resistance, and minimizes fruit storage losses. Seaweed contain almost every micro-

nutrient in a fully chelated (immediately available) form. It is also full of carbohydrates,

which plants use as a building block. Seaweed also contains a number of other

substances called bio stimulants which are claimed to help plants grow, ward off

disease and produce higher crop yields. The bio stimulants in seaweed fertilizer might

be more valuable than the NPK nutrient. Given the high cost of seaweed extract, it’s

important to know if these bio stimulants really work. Seaweed has readily available

nutrients such as nitrogen, magnesium, potassium, and phosphate. It also has other

hormones that boost plant growth. Some university studies show that using seaweed

as a fertilizer can increase the yield in potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, corn, and

cucumbers up to 40%. In addition, the plants suffered less from softening and rotting.

The study suggested that seaweed fertilizer could be the most applicable and should

be widely used in the agriculture industry, as the seed germination rates and root and

shoot elongation were observed high. These fertilizer would lessen the impacts on the

environment. Seaweed fertilizer are among the best modern sustainable biological

plant growth promoters. They have been proven to eliminate plant diseases and abiotic

stresses, leading to maximizing yields. Additionally, they have been listed as

environmentally friendly bio fertilizers. (Agriculture Science, 2021).

Product

MEGA C F1 were popular not only as a food source, but also because of their

beneficial skin healing properties. Rich in minerals and vitamins A, B, C and E,

cucumber has a cooling effect, helping to calm irritations, revitalize the skin and gently

soothe delicate areas of skin like the lips and around the eyes. Cucumbers are also

96% water so are great to incorporate into your diet to keep hydration levels up. This

high water content helps your body flush out any built-up toxins as well.

Figure 2. MEGA C F1” variety used in enterprise.

Market Opportunity

Cucumber is good of income, especially for the small farmer. It can be profitable

and cultivated any time of the year. Cucumber is one of the most highly competitive

vegetables regardless of the month of production. Wholesale marketing, produce

auction, cooperative, local retailers, roadside stands, and pick-your-own operation. You

should conduct some market research because often growers overestimate their ability

to sell in given market. Production of less than one acre of many vegetable crops is

typical for most growers. Several marketing alternatives are available to the cucumber

grower.

5
PRODUCTION AND OPERATION REPORT

Project Location

The production was located at Purok, Sampaguita, Bagong Silang, Maragusan,

Davao de Oro. The land area has vast and porous soil suitable for cucumber

production.

Field Layout

The production area is 50 meters long and 20 meters wide, with 1,000 square

meters. The field was lay-out with 40 plots with a spacing of 1 meter between, and

2,000 seeds.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

Land Preparation

The land preparation was done manually using a bolo and grass hook. The land

was thoroughly prepared by clearing and slashing twice. Zero or minimal tillage was a

practice during the production.

Transplanting

The cucumber seedling was transplanting manually. The cucumber seedling was

transplanted to the field with three to four leaves available. Transplanting should be

done early in the morning or late moon to avoid stress. There was 2,000 cucumber

planted in the area using the planting distance given. Cucumber was transplanted in

the space of 1 meter distance.

PERSONEL FUNCTION

Adviser

The adviser committee of the project was identified before the start of the

semester. She monitored the production guidelines and progress of “ Nacios

Cucumber Production” as an enterprise.

Panel Members

The panel members of the committee were responsible for the assessment of

the information applied as advised by the project adviser. They should visit the location

to monitor the project manager and the production.

Project Manager

The student entrepreneur was the manager of all general activities concerning

rearing the project. Proponents conducted different significant activities in the field,

such as leading the laborers from the materialization of total production and being

responsible for the entire projects planning and conduct.

Labor
The laborers were responsible for all activities that required strength that the

project manager could not able to render. They are paid according to the services they

rendered in the success of the undertaking.

11

MARKET PLAN

Product

The product was sold directly to contact buyers and local markets from the

cucumber market. It’s a direct delivery made to produce the inventory required to

satisfy high market demand. Ensure the proper arrangement for fresh vegetables in

crates after harvesting and select good quality crops.

Pricing

The Nacio’s Cucumber was sold according to market price. Cucumber was sold

for 4,000.00 pesos per box during the first harvest. For the second and third harvest, it

was sold at Php 10,000.00 pesos per box until 22, 500.00 pesos for the third harvest

and mix cucumber was sold on the market with price ranges from Php 40.00 per

kilogram.

Promotion

Cucumber produced by the product manager does not need too much

promotion because it has high demand in the market. Conversely, an information

campaign or product sampling was undertaken among contact buyers and other
identified markets based on the availability of cucumbers. A better need was pondered

for the betterment of pricing. Additionally, promote the product by posting it on social

media platforms.

12

Place of Distribution

The commodities produced were sold to contact buyers’ nearby localities at

Purok Samapaguita, Bagong silang Maragusan Davao de Oro market and to the local

market here in Maragusan.
