VALUING OUR COUNTRY

Sense of Nationalism

Genesis 17:23
Then Abraham took Ishmael his son and all those born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's
house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him.

The Bible teaches nationalism in the sense that believers in Christ are to obey the laws of the land, regardless of their nation
of residence. The Bible stories are testimonials of how a nation is created with different identities and sufferings to protect
God’s kingdom and His Laws. The story of Noah’s ark is an example of how God protected His people by creating a new
land where everyone can protect from wrongdoings and temptations.

Nationalism is loyalty and devotion to a nation. Most people feel a certain level of loyalty to their homelands or the
countries into which they immigrated. It is natural to love one’s homeland, and there is nothing wrong with nationalism per
se. The Bible gives both good and bad examples of nationalism.

Nationalism in the context of Philippine experiences develops a consciousness of belonging to one people and its devotion
of love for one’s country/ Giving importance to unity by way of cultural background, including language and heritage. It is
also the heartfelt dedication to love, care, and preservation of Filipino culture and traditions. Moreover, the sense of
nationalism is also accompanied by a sense of patriotism as it shows its willingness and determination to lay down one’s life
for the fatherland as also translated in different bible stories.Patriotism is a devotion of love for one’s country for no other
reason than being a citizen of that country. It is a common virtue that pertains to the love for a nation, with more emphasis
on own values and beliefs. One who is patriotic will be ready to make any sacrifice for his own country.
One cannot be patriotic without being nationalistic.
