REACTION PAPER
The Sining Kambayoka Ensemble are a group of performers who are undeniably
talented, skillful and passionate in showcasing their cultural origin. Their plays, I must
say left me impressed and amazed. I never thought how a simple malong can be used
in various ways: as a background, a costume and even as a prop such as a boat or a
snake which I think is so brilliant! I will never be able to look at malong the same way
again. Moreover, their acting skills are wonderful considering that their plays usually last
an hour. All of them are excellent at delivering their lines and acting out their roles even
the graceful movement of their hands are eye-catching. They also have such beautiful
voices, they were synchronized in every way and their transitions are impressive. You
don’t even wanna miss their exit because of how pleasing to the eye the way they
organize themselves.
Thanks to their plays, I was able to grasp and had a better understanding of how
beautiful and rich are the culture of the Maranaos. I saw the characteristic of gentleness
and meekness of Maranao women, their jubilant celebrations filled with dancing and
singing along with the sound of kulintang and other ethnic musical instruments. I saw
how they have mastered the art of wearing malong, martial arts, Singkil dance and even
that iconic flicking of handkerchief that made an impression to me. I also love the way
they narrate their stories because it was very entertaining. I must say that I was so
amused and couldn’t stop laughing while watching their performance especially about
the story of Pilandok. Since they were using a mixture of English, Visaya and Tagalog,
it’s hard not to be engaged with their play. They know how to tickle their audience with
their funny lines. Contrary to what I thought, I enjoyed their performance.
In a nutshell, the Sining Kambayoka Ensemble truly excel in performing arts and
are therefore a Filipino pride worthy of international recognition. Their theatre plays are
not only culturally enriching but are also entertaining. In fact, they are worth watching.
