II. PROJECT SUMMARY

Numeracy skills, or the ability to understand and work with numbers, are
essential for success in many areas of life. From calculating the correct change at a
store to analyzing data in a job, numeracy skills are necessary in a wide variety of
contexts. Unfortunately, many students struggle with numeracy and may feel
intimidated or overwhelmed by math-related tasks.

Given the importance of numeracy skills, it is crucial to support students in

developing these skills. This may involve providing targeted instruction and practice in
math concepts, using real-world examples and applications to make math more
relevant and engaging, and addressing common misconceptions and anxieties about
math. By prioritizing and investing in student’s numeracy skills, we can help them
become more confident, competent, and successful learners and individuals.

PROJECT N.U.M.S. was conceptualized to address the non-numerates among

grade 10 students. It is a series of intervention materials specifically supplementary
activities to address the gaps of non-numerates towards being numerates. This project
will target the 7 Grade 10 students identified as non-numerates during the numeracy
test.

II. PROJECT BACKGROUND

In line with the K to 12 Program, the Department of Education (DepEd) is
strengthening its implementation of the Early Language, Literacy, and Numeracy
Program. The Program aims to develop in Filipino children the literacy and numeracy
skills, and attitudes, which will contribute to lifelong learning. With this, it is the goal
of the Department to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of learners.

COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the numeracy skills of high
school students especially Grade 10 students. Disruptions to in-person learning,
limited access to technology, increased distractions and stress, reduced motivation,
and widened achievement gaps are among the challenges faced by students during
this time. However, targeted interventions and creative instructional approaches can
help mitigate these effects and support students in developing their numeracy skills
during and after the pandemic.

Such intervention like supplementary materials is essential in addressing the

numeracy skills of high school students. These materials can provide additional
support to struggling students, challenge high-achieving students, address gaps in
instruction, and provide a variety of learning experiences and opportunities. By
ensuring that all high school students have access to high-quality supplementary
materials, we can help ensure that they can develop strong numeracy skills and
succeed in high school and beyond.

Thus, to address the target of the school and the DepEd to enhance numeracy skills of
the students, PROJECT N.U.M.S . focusing on the skills of the students in numeracy
will be its stepping stone towards achieving numeracy by the end of S.Y. 2023.

IV. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Project N.U.M.S. aims to:

1. Achieve 100% numerates among Grade 10 students at the end of S.Y. 2023.
2. Craft supplementary materials to enhance numeracy skills of 7 non-numerates
of Grade 10 students.
