MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

GRADE 4
TERM 4: Oct – Dec

PROVINCE:

DISTRICT:

SCHOOL:

TEACHER’S NAME:

DATE:

DURATION: 1 Hour

1. TOPIC: Mass: Units: calculating in grams and kilograms(Lesson 5)

2. CONCEPTS & SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED:

By the end of the lesson, learners should be able

 calculate in both grams and kilograms

 to sequence containers marked in grams and/or kilograms.

Grade 4 Lesson Plan: Term 4

MEASUREMENT: Mass: (Lesson 5)
(Draft)
3. RESOURCES: DBE workbook 2, DBE textbook (TG and LB), Any other textbooks.
 The difference between a gram and a kilogram.
4. PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:  How to fill in a number line with 10 un-numbered intervals(e.g. in
their rulers)
5. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF HOMEWORK (suggested time: 10 minutes)

Homework provides an opportunity for teachers to track learners’ progress in the mastery of
mathematics concepts and to identify the problematic areas which require immediate attention.
Therefore it is recommended that you place more focus on addressing errors from learner responses
that may later become misconceptions.

6. INTRODUCTION (Suggested time: 10 minutes)

Explain to the learners that lighter objects are measured in grams and 1000g equal to 1kg.
Let learners count forward in 100’s up to 1000.

Ask learners to complete the number line as shown blow:

Note: Read the number of intervals, which is 10 between 0 kg and 1 kg. ( 1kg = 1 000g, therefore this means
1 000 g ÷ 10 which will result in 100g, 200g, 300g, 400g, 500g, 600g, 700g, 800g, 900g .

7. LESSON PRESENTATION/DEVELOPMENT (Suggested time: 20 minutes)

Teaching activities Learning activities
Discuss the following activity with the learners: (Learners are
Activity 1 expected to :
Teacher has two kitchen scales, A and B.
Name the kitchen scale which shows a greater mass if:
1 Let learners do the
(a) A shows 1 kg and B shows 1kg and 100 g
4 calculations of the
1 1 second and third
Solution: 1 kg = [( 1 ×1 000) +¿ × 1 000)]
4 4 questions.
= 1 000 +¿ 250
= 1 250
∴ 1 250 = 1kg and 250g, scale A shows a greater mass.

1
(b) A shows 2 kg and 400 g and B shows 2 kg
2
1 1
Solution: 2 kg = [(2 ×1 000) +¿ × 1 000)]
2 2
= 2 000 +¿ 500
= 2 500
∴ 2 500 = 2kg and 500g, scale B shows a greater mass.

1
(c) A shows 1 kg and B shows 1 500g.

Solution: 1 kg = 1kg and 500g
2

∴ Both scales show the same mass.

Activity 2
Allow learners to
1. Convert the following kg to g workout activity 2 by
1 showing all their
kg = 250g
4 working as done in
1 activity 1.
kg = 500g
2
5kg = 1000g
3. Write the following in kg and g
4 250g = 4kg and 250g

8. CLASSWORK (Suggested time: 15 minutes)

Answer this questions by showing all the necessary steps.

1. Write the mass in grams
(a) 1kg
(b) 3kg
2
(c) kg
4
3
(d) kg
4
2. Write the mass in kilograms or fractions of kilograms.
(a) 1 000 g
(b) 5 500 g
(c) 750 g
(d) 500 g
3. Fill in the missing numbers to make the sentences true.
(a) 4 kg and 125 g = …g
(b) 2 350 g = …kg and 350 g

9. CONSOLIDATION/CONCLUSION & HOMEWORK (Suggested time: 5
minutes)

a) Emphasise that:

b) The primary purpose of Homework is to give each learner an opportunity to

demonstrate mastery of mathematics skills taught in class. Therefore Homework
should be purposeful and the principle of ‘Less is more’ is recommended, i.e. give
learners few high quality activities that address variety of skills than many activities
that do not enhance learners’ conceptual understanding.
Carefully select appropriate activities from the DBE textbooks (TG and LB),
workbooks and/or textbooks for learners’ homework. The selected activities should
address different cognitive levels.
