jiayi: hey Joshua! did you know its Earth Week this week?

I wonder what our school is doing

for Earth Week!
joshua: I heard that the students in the Humanities Immersion Programme have set up a
worm composting bin in the school! They also have a few workshops lined up for the
students to participate in!
jiayi: oh really? how does the worm composting bin work?
joshua: composting is a process where we turn food waste like banana peels and vegetable
stems into fertilizer for plants. we do so in worm composting by passing the food waste
through special composting worms! Apart from Worm composting, there are several other
methods to make composts, such of which u can try out at home! These include Open air
composting, tumbler composting and Bacterial composting!
jiayi: some of us in HIP have been trying out worm composting on our own and they're keen
to share with you their experience! They even have a workshop lined up for you tomorrow to
use the compost, a by-product of composting, to create kokedama, your very own soil
compost plant! Also, in lieu with earth day, we will also be conducting a bunch of workshops
to promote environmental sustainability during Earth Day!
joshua: Now you may be wondering why we’re trying to be more environmentally
sustainable, even though it seems like it makes life tougher for us. However, many of you
don’t the effects of your food wastage in Singapore. When food is wasted, We will need to
build more waste disposal facilities, such as waste-to-energy plants and landfills for
incineration ash. This is not sustainable for land-scarce Singapore.
jiayi: The kokedama workshop is tomorrow, so don't forget to sign up using the google form
sent out to your preshigh email, or you can scan the qr code found on the posters that have
been put up around school! Come and visit us at IT room 3 on level 1 at 315pm after school
tomorrow!
both: see you there!
