Sleep is an inseparable part of human health and life, which is crucial in learning,
practice, as well as physical and mental health. It is necessary for the maintenance of physical
and mental health as well as the capacity to learn and practice new abilities. Insufficient sleep,
brief bursts of sleep more frequently, staying up late, and early wake-up hours all have an
impact on learning capacity, academic performance, and neurobehavioral processes (Duarte J,
et al. 2014).
Those who don't get enough sleep are suffering from sleep deprivation. This could be
a short-term issue that only affects one or a few nights, or it could be a chronic issue that lasts
for weeks or even months. Lack of sleep is a frequent problem of several medical conditions but
can also be caused by a variety of circumstances, many of which are harmless. The
neurological system is negatively impacted by a lack of sleep, which affects how well the brain
functions.
According to the study of (Ahrberg, K. et al. 2012), believes that stress from lack of
sleep causes poor school performance. Stress is characterized as a condition of anxiety or
mental tension brought on by a challenging circumstance. Stress is a normal human reaction
that motivates us to deal with problems and dangers in our lives. Everyone goes through
periods of stress. But, how we handle stress has a significant effect on our psychological state
holistically.
This study aimed to determine the Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the academic
performance of Senior High School Students of Santa Ignacia High School.

b. Age; and
c. Sex
3. What are the negative effects of sleep deprivation to the students and their academic
performance?
Hypothesis
Students. In this study, students become more knowledgeable enough about how they are
affected by sleep deprivation in terms of academic performance. And they can be aware of what
are the consequences of that case.
Teachers. The study can help the teachers to understand the effects of sleep deprivation in the
academic performance of their students and may serve as an eye opener on how they will
handle them. Hence, they can give extra activities at school instead of giving them activities at
home so that students can have plenty of rest.
Parents. This study will give information to the parents of the students on how their child's
academic performance is affected by sleep deprivation since it can cause a huge consequence.
In that case, they can help their child over his/her academic works at home.
School Administration. This study could help the school to find a way what is needed to
improve and balance the school schedule.
Future Researchers. The results of this study will be beneficial to them because it will serve as
their future reference in conducting a research which is related in this study.
This study is limited to those who are not students of Santa Ignacia High School and
those who are not senior high school students of Santa Ignacia High School.
Definition Of Terms
For better understanding of the study, the following terms were defined based on sources on
how these terms were used.

Neurobehavioral. Having to do with the way the brain affects emotion, behavior, and learning.
Learning. The acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught.
Consequences. A result or effect of an action or condition.
