Data and Decisions

Case 4
Hypothesis testing with t-test
Case:
the following students' scores are observed before and after the training tutorial
session. Below is the data, test the hypothesis and determine whether the hypothesis is
true or false.
pre- post-
test test
students scores scores
1 88 91
2 82 84
3 84 88
4 93 90
5 75 79
6 78 90
7 84 88
8 87 90
9 95 90
10 91 96
11 83 88
12 89 89
13 77 81
14 68 74
15 91 92

The difference in scores is calculated below in a table:

pre- post-
test test
students scores scores difference
1 88 91 -3
2 82 84 -2
3 84 88 -4
4 93 90 3
5 75 79 -4
6 78 90 -12
7 84 88 -4
8 87 90 -3
9 95 90 5
10 91 96 -5
11 83 88 -5
12 89 89 0
13 77 81 -4
14 68 74 -6
15 91 92 -1

After running the students t- test, we get the following results for the test:

Taking alpha value as 0.05, we get;

• 0.00519 is the p-value with one-tail test.
• 0.010379 is the p-value with two-tail test.
Since, alpha value is lesser that p-value, the null hypothesis is true.
