Introduction of Plan
My Philosophy
This unit plan will bring focus to the mechanics of movement and how that relates, contributes, and builds to many skills seen in
gymnastics. I have chosen this unit because from my own gym class experiences, gymnastics (along with dance) was the unit that the
majority of students dreaded the most. There were very few students that absolutely loved these units and with being one who loved it, I
want to change that. The skills learnt through participating in gymnastics can help set individuals up for leading a healthy and active
lifestyle. The locomotor and non-locomotor movements used to participate in gymnastics are ones that can be taken to many other activities
as well.
This unit reflects my teaching philosophy in that it is a goal of mine to make each lesson as engaging and interesting as possible so that
students, in turn, will be excited to learn and participate. With a goal of mine being to create a positive atmosphere where all feel welcome
and included, I am hoping that by providing a space for students to explore movement and be creative within that movement, this space will
be conducive for allowing them to discover activities that they truly enjoy. This should in turn promote that being active and leading a
healthy lifestyle does not just mean running or doing strenuous activities. More so just finding a way or activity to move your body that you
love.
Outcomes
The outcomes that will be addressed in this unit will allow students to explore different types of movement that contributes to the
building blocks of gymnastics. The students will be given time to practice the different types of movement formatively before they are
summatively assessed. All skills will first be practiced individually and then students will be provided time to put their learnt skills to use as

a group. To culminate everything that has been practiced throughout the unit, we will end with a performance task of creating gymnastics
routines in small groups. Within this task, students must practice their safety standards, contribute to a positive teamwork attitude, and show
Assessment
The goal of this unit is not to turn a group of students into gymnasts. Student’s will not be docked marks if they do not perform each
movement perfectly – that is not the goal of this. I am looking to simply expose students to different ways to lead an active lifestyle.
Students will be first formatively and then summatively assessed on their locomotor and non-locomotor skills. While the skills do need to be
executed, I am not looking for perfect form – just that there has been effort put forth to learn and try new things. By participating in a peer
evaluation first, I want my students to create authentic feedback for their peers to help them learn and grow their skills. Safety will be
assessed every class. It is important to emphasize how to participate safely in all activities but especially in ones that have a higher risk for
injury. The final assessment will be their performance task based upon creating a group gymnastics routine. Students will be given time to
create and perfect their routines before performing for the class. The students will be given a pre-evaluation checklist to ensure that their
routine has all the elements that must be included. Attached on their performance task will be a rubric to outline how their routines will be
Students will be encouraged to work only within their comfort zone. Meaning that we will not be pressuring our
Students will be taught to be aware of their personal and general space when doing gymnastic activities.
o Ex) if doing a cartwheel, making sure that the space is clear and that classmates are aware of what you are
about to do.
Skills will only be done on the gym mats in order to ensure safety if/when falls happen.
o The gym mats will also be connected properly in order for them to stay together.
The teacher will make sure that they are free to observe the entire class to ensure that all students are adhering to the
safety rules.
Students will be working with each other as they choreograph their routines and therefore:
Encourage and participate in creating a positive environment by working collaboratively and cooperatively with each
other
Need to understand that their peers will all have differing gymnastics abilities and be cognizant and respectful as they
Need to pick school appropriate music for their routine that will need to be approved by the teacher first.
