Basic Maintenance of Sewing
Machine in Dressmaking/Tailoring

What I Know

Directions: Read and analyze each statement carefully. Write on your answer sheet
the word YES if the statement is true about the sewing machine and NO
if it is not.

1. The sewing machine is man’s greatest invention for sewing.

2. In a threading sewing machine, threading starts at the thread guide.
3. Machines should be blown off every day to remove the trash.
4. To prevent looping stitches adjust the tension for both upper and lower tension.
5. The sewing machine is operated by hand.

What’s In

Activity 5.1: Share Your Experience!

From your experience in doing a simple project like an apron, did you encounter
common troubles of the sewing machine while on its operation? How did you handle
the situation properly? Write your answer in your notebook.

Activity 5.2: Tell Me!

Do you have a sewing machine in your house? Have you experienced using it?
How do you take care of it? Write your answer in your notebook.

What is It

SETTING OF SEWING MACHINES

Perfect machine stitching is easy to achieve if you set the machine properly.
This involves threading the upper and lower parts of the sewing machine. The
beginner in dressmaking must learn how to thread the head of the sewing machine as
one of the first steps in becoming a competent operator.

THREADING THE MACHINE

Each part of the threading mechanism on the head of a sewing machine

has a definite purpose in guiding the thread from the spool to the needle. The thread
must pass through the various guides in a given order so that the machine will sew
properly the formed stitches.

STEPS

1. Put the spool of thread on the

spool pin.

2. Bring the thread guide to the
thread.

guide by positioning it at the back
and pulling it to the front of the
guide.

7. Continue by pulling the thread
down toward the needle.

8. Place the thread in the first thread

guide by sliding it in place. (This
varies by machine.)

9. Slide the thread into the next

thread guide, right before the
needle.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF SEWING MACHINE TROUBLES

If the sewing machine in your laboratory are kept in good condition and are
carefully adjusted and properly threaded, not too many things can go wrong. But
certain difficulties occur during an operation so often, so you should know these minor
and common problems their causes, and remedies. There are two classifications of
sewing machine troubles, namely:

1. Minor sewing machine trouble

This refers to problems that arise involving incorrectly attached accessories or
supplies, unadjusted tensions, or that requires a little dusting or oiling.

2. Major sewing machine trouble

This involves replacing or removing damaged spare parts that made the
sewing machine not functioning.

Setting the Stitch Length

The length of the machine stitch is controlled by the
stitch regulator. The choice of the stitch length depends on the
fabric, type of garment, and the location of the s t i t c h i n g . The
stitch length setting on the sewing machine allows adjusting
the number of stitches sewn per inch. The weight, thickness,
and type of fabric sewn will determine the stitch
length to use.

Machine Tension
Tension is what keeps your bottom and top
stitches in equal tension with one another. It is
what keeps your front and back stitches looking
the same. Both the top and bottom tension must
work together to create consistent stitching. If the
top and bottom stitches aren’t even, it may be due
to your tension not being right on the top or
bottom.

Sewing Machine Maintenance Checklist

1. Check to see if the machines are being kept clean

➢ The machine should be blown off every day to remove lint and trash
➢ On lockstitch machines, the hook should be blown off regularly during
the day to prevent lint or dirt from building up in the oil ports in the race
of the hook.
2. Check to see that the machines are being lubricated regularly
➢ Oil level should be checked daily and additional oil added if necessary
8
➢ Randomly check the oil levels in the machines
3. Check for the rusted area due to excessive moisture in the production area
4. Check machines for wear on critical moving parts
➢ Check for shake in needle bar due to worn needle bar bushing
➢ Check for excessive movement in stitch forming device, etc.
5. Check the condition of critical screws
➢ Check for missing screws
➢ Check for defective screws that are difficult to tighten properly
6. Checks tools to see that they are being maintained properly

Activity 5.3: Find My Match!

Directions: Match the possible causes in column A with the specific troubles in
column B. Write the letter of your answer in your notebook.

A B
1. Poor quality thread a. Thread break
2. Screws are loose b. Looping stitch
3. Do not match upper and lower tension c. Puckered stitch
4. Incorrect attachment of needle d. Machine is noisy
5. High thread tension e. Needle break

What I Have Learned

Activity 5.4 Think and Be Enlightened!

Directions: Let’s see what you have learned from the lesson. Answer the questions
below and write your answer in paragraph form in your notebook.

1. What are the steps in threading your sewing machine including the bobbin?
2. What will you do if there is a looping of thread on the fabric?
