Social Media and Student’s Academic Performance

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The advancement in technology and internet leads for the social media to become

an important part of everyone’s life. It is a digital platform that allows the

sharing of ideas and information among people easier. It can take many different forums, weblog,

wikis, podcast, pictures, and videos. The occurrence of social media like Facebook results our

world to be divided into two, the online and the offline. (Worldnoor, 2021)

Academic achievement plays an important role in student’s life. It is considered as the

outcome of education, a basis if a student or teacher has achieved their goals. According to

Hoyle (1986), school are established to provide knowledge and skills to students, and improving

academic performance is a way to achieve it. Also, students are expected to finish studies with

a good academic result. A student who has a good academic performance are believed to have

great job, higher income, and higher self- confidence. Because of these, a lot of people think of

the ways that can improve their academic performance (Tadere, Yeshane, & Mulu, 2022).

During COVID 19 pandemic, social media gained a lot of users including students.

However, there are people who do not consider social media as a good tool in academics.

Everything has its pros and cons just like social media, but instead of focusing on its

shortcomings, it is better to take opportunity out of it and discover its proper utilization (Pathak,

2022).
The purpose of the conduct of this study is to determine the effects of social media in the

academic performance of SHS students of Malinao School for Philippine Craftsmen (MSPC).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effect of social media in academic performance among

senior high school students of Malinao School for Philippine Craftsmen for school year 2022-

2023.

Specifically, this study will answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of respondents in terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

2. What is the level of social media use in terms of:

a. Forms of social media

b. Frequency of social media use

c. Purpose of social media

2. What is the level of academic performance of Senior High School students based on

their:

a. Written task

b. Quarterly exam
c. Performance task

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the effects of social media on the academic performance among

Senior High School students of Malinao School for Philippine Craftsmen, school year 2022-

2023. The respondents of the study will be limited to 69 Senior High School students of Malinao

School for Philippine Craftsmen.

Significance of the Study

Students. This study will benefit the students because they are the focus of the study.

They will become more knowledgeable on how social media really works on their academic

performance.

Teachers. This study will benefit the teachers because it will allow them to share their

knowledge, ideas, collaboration, and interaction through social networking sites with their

students.

Parents. This study will provide knowledge to parents about the effects of social media

to the academic performance of their children and will serve as guide in the proper utilization of

social media.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as basis for future researchers for their

related studies. The result of this study can be used by future researchers to gather data and

enhance their study.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology which will be employed during the study. In light

of this, the areas of the study and reasons which underpin the choice of area are explained. In

these chapter, research design, research locale, participants of the study, sampling procedure,

data gathering instrument, and data gathering procedure are provided. Explanations are also

provided on how instruments would be validated and how data should be collected and analyzed.

Research Design

Research design is the conceptual structure within which research is conducted and

includes the collection and analysis of data which are relevant to the study. Saunders (2003)

defines the descriptive research design as one which looks with intense accuracy at the

phenomena of the moment and then describes precisely what the researcher sees. Descriptive

research design is concerned with describing characteristics of a problem. Therefore, descriptive

research design is the most suitable research design for this study because it relies much on

secondary data which helps in developing the case basing on facts, sustained by statistics and

descriptive interpretations from archival materials and data.

Research Locale

This study will be carried out in Malinao School for Philippine Craftsmen, Bigaa Malinao

Aklan.
Malinao School for Philippine Craftsmen is a technical vocational school in Malinao,

Aklan established to promote livelihood and industry. The main function of the school is to train

the youths and adults in skills, production, marketing, and cooperative education; it undertakes

studies in processing, strengthening, and utilization of Philippine indigenous materials. This

school consist of two department, the Junior High School and Senior High School department. In

Senior High School department, they offer four different strands; General Academic Strand

(GAS), Industrial Art Strand (IA), Home Economic Strand (HE), and Information and

Communication Technology (ICT).

Participants of the Study

The respondents of this study will be the Senior High School students of Malinao School

for Philippine Craftsmen, covered by the academic year 2022-2023.

A total of 69 respondents which constitutes 20% of the entire population will be selected

to represent the whole population.

Sampling Procedure

Sampling technique are categorized into two, the probability sampling and the non-

probability sampling. For the purpose of this research, stratified random sampling which is under

the probability sampling will be used. Adam Hayes (2022) pointed out that stratifies random

sampling is a method of sampling that involves the division of a population into smaller

subgroups known as strata. In a stratified random sampling, or stratification, the strata are

formed based on members’ shared attributes or characteristics, such as income or educational

attainment. Therefore, stratified random

sampling will be best sampling technique for this study because it ensures an equal

representation of each of the identified segments or strata.

Data Gathering Instrument:

The researchers will make use of a questionnaire as the data gathering instrument. Reason

(1985) defines a questionnaire as a formalized list of questions that are used to solicit information

from respondents. The questionnaire will be composed of three parts. Part 1 will be about the

profile of respondents which includes the name, age, sex, grade and section and their

specialization. While part 2 will consist of the questions that determine the level of academic

performance of the students and will be categorized into three parts: written task, quarterly

exam, and performance task. And lastly, part 3 will determine the effects of social media in

students based on its frequency of use, types of social media, and the purpose of its use.

This will be measured in terms of the given numerical value.

Numeric Value Description

1 - Strongly Disagree 2

- Disagree

3 - Neutral

4 - Agree

5 - Strongly Agree

The researcher will also be using this method of data gathering for it is known to have less

bias and least expensive way of collecting data. And finally, the element of
anonymity associated with the questionnaire enhances the chances of getting honest responses.

Data Gathering Procedure:

A letter of request to conduct the study at Malinao School for Philippine Craftsmen will

be prepared. After the validation of the questionnaire checklist constructed by the researcher, the

questionnaires will be delivered in person. Questionnaires will be distributed in after initial

communication with the respondents to seek consent. The researcher will explain to the

respondents the importance of their response in the study. The respondent will be given 5

minutes to answer the questions after which the questionnaire was submitted and corrected by

the research teacher. After the respondents answered the questionnaire, the researcher will collect

and tally the data for interpretation.
