ACT ONE – SCHOOL, CLASSROOM

JOVELYN visits her son’s school during the card-giving day to know JOHANNE’s performance in class.
TEACHER LORA waits for JOVELYN.

LORA: Good afternoon, ma’am Jovelyn! Kumusta na, maam? Busy na kaayo ka lately?

JOVELYN: Good afternoon, teacher! Mao lagi.. ever since ni-larga ang akong husband pa-abroad, I have
to work double effort for my son to give him the time and attention he needs.

LORA: Lisud jud maam sa nga ang imong lifetime partner layo kaayo ninyo.

JOVELYN: Kaayo, teacher. Naa gyuy times nga only ang iyang papa ra jud ang maka-help niya sa iyang
mga issues. Like, you know, boys’ stuff?

LORA: (polite laughter) I couldn’t agree more. Anyway, ma’am, sa last quarter kay I have already told
you the weaknesses nga need i-focus ni Johanne sa academics, diba ma’am? So, I’d like to ask… unsa’y
mga home interventions nga imong gi-apply ma’am to help him cope with his weaknesses?

JOVELYN: Uhm.. after pag last nga card-giving day, teacher, we talked about it. Ako siyang gipangutana if
unsa’y reason ngano gagmay ang iyang grades.. then he told me nga lisud daw ang lessons. But ni-
promise man siya nako teacher nga iyaha pa gyud buhaton iyang best para sa kani nga quarter,
especially nga scholar siya, and lisud na if mawagtang pa iyang scholarship because na-failed siya.

LORA: I see, maam. (heavily sighs) I have to be honest with you maam ha? Johanne is still not doing well
in his academics. In fact, (shows records to JOVELYN) twice na ni niya nga hagbong sa English, Math and
Science, nga kani pajud tulo kay core subjects nga nagplay ug critical role sa iyang academic stats. The
teachers are already complaining kay wala daw pass-pass ug outputs si Johanne. He comes late to
school, then he cuts classes, and if naa siya sa class, matulog ra siya. Is there a problem, maam?

JOVELYN: (Speechless) b-but makakita man ko niya sa balay teacher nga magstudy… nya dugay siya
makauli kay tungod daw daghan sila’g group projects. He even spent so much para sa mga amot-amot
gani nila..
LORA: Ma’am, I am very sorry. Even if you ask his classmates, he has never participated to any group
activities daw nila.

JOVELYN: Pero nganong wala’y ni-contact nako saw a pa nagcard-giving day?

LORA: All of us tried to contact you, ma’am.. but dili namo ma-contact ang number nga naka-register sa
profile ni Johanne. We tried to reach you out via messenger, but no reply, not even seen.

JOVELYN: (sobbing) I’m very sorry, teacher, if nang-blame nako. Wala ko kabalo unsa akong buhaton…

LORA: (comforts JOVELYN) We’re so sorry also, ma’am.. We’re not happy about this, too. Don’t worry,
maam, when the classes resume, and mosulod siya sa among class, I’ll try to talk to him privately.

JOVELYN: Thank you, teacher.. (stands up) Thank you sa inyong help. Pasensya najud sa akong anak.
Even ako iyahang giilad sad.

LORA: Don’t worry, ma’am.. he is not the first one here in school. If you need any help maam, please
don’t hesitate to contact us. Okay?

JOVELYN: Salamat kaayo, teacher.. Bye. (exits)

ACT TWO – HOUSE, LATE NIGHT

JOVELYN sits on the couch, waiting for her son at the late hour. JOHANNE enters the scene wearing
uniform and a bag.

JOHANNE: (bless)

JOVELYN: Nganong karon pa ka niuli?

JOHANNE: (sighs) Ma, you already know it. Naa mi group project nga tiwason.

JOVELYN: (slaps the report card to JOHANNE) Then explain this to me!

JOHANNE slowly opens his report card while JOVELYN is ranting.

JOVELYN: English, Math and Science—hagbong ka! Other minor subjects, AT LEAST, nakapatong ug 75!
Nya karon, mamakak pa ka nako nga gikan mo nag group project?! At this late hour?!---

JOHANNE: MA! Ni-message man sad ko nimo nga dugay ko maka-uli ron!

JOVELYN: Ug tan-aw nimo, makatubag na sa pangutana nganong hagbong ka?! Dong! Basin nalimot ka
nga scholar ka and need ka magmaintain ug grades! Unsa’y tan-aw nimo sa pagskwela? Duwa-duwa ra?!

JOHANNE: Ma, pwede nako matulog? Gikapoy ko karon. (exits while JOVELYN is talking)

JOVELYN: Unsa man sad ang imong gikapoyan?! Johanne! Wala pata nahuman ug sturya!
ACT THREE – STREETS, NIGHT

ELLESSE and AARON wait for JOHANNE in the streets at night, playing Mobile Legends. JOHANNE arrives
and they do their handshake.

ELLESSE: Dugaya gud nimo naabot?

JOHANNE: Nagsugod nang tournament?!

AARON: Wala oy! Nagpractice pa mi. Pero hapit na magsugod.

JOHANNE: (talks while preparing his phone for mobile legends) Gihuwat pa nako si mama matog.

ELLESSE: Gikasab-an man daw ka sa imong mama ganina bai? (laughs) Ingon akong igsoon. Nilabay ra
siyas inyoha nya mura’g gasyagit to imong mama.

JOHANNE: Ay wala rato oy!

AARON: Lawgawa. (laughs) Hagbong nasad ka sa?

JOHANNE: Di man sad ta madato ana seg skwela gud. Kaning tournament, madato jud ta ani.

ELLESSE: Basta haaa tarunga lang jud ninyog duwa kay na, wagtang jud ning 10,000 nato ron.

AARON: Asa diay ka kuha aning 10,000 pang pusta nato, bai Johanne?

ELLESSE: Aw.. asa paman diay? (laughs) Sa scholarship niya!

AARON: (surprised) tarong bitaw?! Huy bai! Sakto ba diay ni?

JOHANNE: Ah! Karon pa ka mag-ingana nga ato nang napusta.

AARON: Karon pa man sad ko kabalo!

JOHANNE: Ayaw ug kabalaka bai.. kay doble man sad atong daug ani.

ELLESSE: Make sure lang jud nga madaog ta ani para makabawi tas pang tuition ni Johanne.

AARON: Ah sige sige. Wa naman sad tay mahimo, Napusta naman sad nimo.

ELLESSE: Mga bai, sud namo!

JOHANNE plays Mobile Legends with AARON and ELLESSE.

ACT FOUR – HOUSE

JOVELYN is crying on the table, holding a letter. Teacher LORA is comforting her. JOHANNE enters.

JOHANNE: Ma’am? Naa lagi ka diri? Ug ma, ngano gahilak ka?

LORA: Dong, lingkod sa diri. Magsturya ta.

JOHANNE: (sits down)

LORA: Dong, gi-advise for transfer ka sa school tungod sa inyong school balance nga 50,000. Diba, dong,
scholar man ka sa organization outside sa school? Wala na nagpadala ug money ang imong scholarship
program?

JOHANNE: w-wala na.

LORA: Sukad kanus-a pa sila wala nagpadala ug pangbayad sa imong tuition?

JOHANNE: Uhm.. (itching his head)

LORA: Dong? Asa nimo gigamit ang kwarta?

JOHANNE: (sudden change of emotion) Ma’am sorry! (sobbing) Sorry nadala rako… akong gipusta ang
kwarta sa among tournament sa mobile legends.

JOVELYN: Ha?!! Johanne sad oy! Wa naman intawn ka naghunahuna! Kabalo ba ka nga ma-penalty ta
ana imong gibuhat?! Unsa naman lang atong buhaton?! Unsa ma’y gibuhat namo nimo dong nga
gahatag man ka’g dakong tunok sa among kinabuhi oy! (wailing)

JOHANNE: Ma… sorry.. abi nako madaog mi gud sa tournament… Sorry ma… sorry…

ACT FIVE – HOUSE, PANTOMIME

JOVELYN spends 1 week in her room crying to God. To compensate his mother, JOHANNE prepares food
for her, brings her meal in her room, and checks on her from time to time.

One side of the stage, JOVELYN is praying and crying. JOHANNE enters at the opposite side of the stage,
bring a tray of meal for her, quietly place the tray on the table, and watches her with a sad face, and
then leaves, bowing his head.

ACT SIX – HOUSE

JOVELYN prepares to leave.

JOVELYN: Johanne! Naa ra’y sud-an sa ref ha?! Mobalik rako dayon nig human sa among discipleship!
(exits)

JOHANNE slowly enters and sits on the couch, and finds JOVELYN’s Bible there.

JOHANNE: Hala, nabilin ni mama iyang Bible oh. (grabs the Bible, opens it and finds a note inside)

JOVELYN: (voice-over) Dear Lord Jesus, sakit kaayo ang nabuhat sa akong anak, Lord, pero love gihapon
kaayo nako siya. Gusto ko unta Lord, nga marealize niya unsa kabug-at ang resulta sa sala. Apan, Lord,
tabangi akong anak please, nga mapadool pa siya pagmaayo sa Imoha, kay Ikaw lamang ang mas
nakasabot niya. Kabalo Ka sa iyang kalisud nga dili niya masulti, sa iyang pain nga di niya maipakita sa
akoa, ug sa iyang confusion nga di niya mapangutana. Tabangi akong anak, please, nga makita niya nga
ang tanang tubag, naa lamang sa pagsunod ug pagtahud sa Ginoo. Sincerely praying, Jovelyn.

JOVELYN enters.

JOVELYN: Johanne! Palihug ragud ko sa akong--- (stops when she sees Johanne reading the note in her
Bible).. Bible.

JOHANNE: (sobbing) Ma… (kneels down in front of Jovelyn, crying very hard on her feet) Pasaylo-a ko sa
tanan pain nga akong gihatag sa imoha. I’m sorry wala nako nahimong comfort nimo, but heartache. Dili
ko perfect nga anak nimo ma… I’m so sorry…

JOVELYN: (reaches down for her son) Nak… Hagbay naman tikang gipasaylo.. ug wala man pod ko nag-
expect nimo nga dapat di naka makasala.. ang akoa lang nak kay dapat mubangon ka, ug ayaw padala sa
mga butang nga makapalayo nimo sa Ginoo, kay the more ka magpalayo, the more pod ka mahimong
kasakit sa uban. Padool ta pagmaayo sa Ginoo nak.. kay Siya ra jud ang kabalo unsaon pag-guide nato
para mahimo tang blessing sa uban.

JOHANNE: (sobbing) yes ma.. Thank you ma..
