We know that every year less than 100 people are attacked by sharks and about 5 to 10 of
these people die. But, let’s look at the other side of the story – How many sharks do people kill?
Well I think you already know this: People kill many more sharks. Every year, people hunt and
kill thousands of sharks. One reason people kill sharks is for sport; they hunt them just for fun.
Some people started to have contests to see who kill the most sharks or the bigger sharks.
Another reason that people kill sharks is for food. In some countries, such as the United States
and Great Britain, shark meat is a popular food. In other countries, such as China, people use
shark fins to make soup. Because so many people like to eat shark, fishing boats catch a lot of
sharks to sell for food.
So, for both of these reasons, people are killing many sharks. Some biologists are getting
worried that the number of sharks in the world is getting too small. That’s why many biologists
think we should stop killing so many sharks, and instead try to protect them – or else someday
they may become extinct. Some countries have already passed some laws to help protect sharks.
The United States, for example, has passed laws that limit the number of sharks that people can
kill or food or for sport. So even though some people like to hunt sharks, we do need protect
them.

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different times.
Music may seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react differently to
the music. We are able to apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If someone hates jazz,
then a jazz piece with a positive effect will probably not make him feel good. A happy song
might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the music itself that is creating the
anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry person does not want to accept the
song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and makes that anger come to the
surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listening to it, our body, mind, and feelings
are being affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such as China, India, Turkey and Greece
understood the effects of music. In fact, Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, introduced a whole
science that concerned them. Because the musicians of these ancient cultures understood these
effects, they created music that was positive, uplifting, and beneficial. Once the effects of music
are better understood, the next step is to gain a better understanding of the music around us, and
what effect it is actually having.

Tigers are one of the most powerful and graceful animals in the world. The different
species that still exist today, namely the Bengal, Indochina, Siberian, South China and Sumatra
tigers are in danger of becoming extinct. Due to irresponsible hunting, the Bali, Caspian and Java
tigers have already become extinct. This could soon happen to the other species too.
In the past, tigers were considered as pests. With a smaller area to hunt, as man had taken
up more of the land to build upon, the tigers found less area for themselves to hunt. They thus
turned to farms to get their food. Farmers’ livestock were attacked by these tigers. People were
then encouraged to hunt and kill these animals with the promise of rewards. Even after the threat
of tigers on livestock was over, man continued to hunt tigers, this time for recreation. Poachers
too hunt tigers for their body parts knowing that the skin of tigers is much sought after. Bones
and other organs are also used as ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. Although killing is

Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of
pronouncing his own language; but few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing
foreign languages. There are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious.
But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general doo not speak foreign languages
very well is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce, and
consequently never set about tackling it in the right way. Too many people fail to realize that
pronouncing a foreign language is a skill – one that needs careful training of a special kind, and
one that cannot be acquired by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of
languages, while recognizing the importance of a good accent, tend to neglect, in their practical
teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to
make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote
some of the lesson time to this, and should get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of
receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such
as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the moment to take second place.
26. What does the writer actually say about pronouncing foreign languages?
A. Only a few people are really proficient.
B. No one is really an expert in the skill.
C. There aren’t many people who are even fairly good.
D. There are a lot of people who are moderately proficient.
27. The writer argues that going about the problem of pronunciation in the wrong way is
________.
A. an obvious cause of not grasping the problem correctly
B. a fundamental consequence of not speaking well
C. a consequence of not grasping the problem correctly
D. not an obvious cause of speaking poorly
28. The underlined word “one” in the passage refers to _________.
