I. Mệnh đề quan hệ là gì
Phân tích ví dụ:
1. The girl is my friend.
2. The girl who lives in the second floor is my friend.
3. The man who I broke up with will get married next month.
4. The precursor of aspirin is salicin which is found in willow tree bark.

II. Các đại từ quan hệ

Who: nói về người (không nói về things)
- People who is not trained should not inject calcium.
Whom: nói về người, làm tân ngữ (trong Anh – Anh ít dùng, who phổ biến hơn)
- The nurse whom I talked to is single.
Whose: thay thế cho danh/đại từ sở hữu, hầu hết à dùng cho người (thay cho
her/his/their …)
- The drug whose effect is altered is referred to as the object drug. (S)
- What is the name of the doctor whose prescription you took? (O)
Which: nói về “things”: sự vật, sự kiện, động vật ….
- I take these vows voluntarily with which I am entrusted by the public.
That: thay thế được cho who, whom, which đặc khi theo sau đại từ bất định
Where = in/at which
When = on/at/in which
Why = for which

Lưu ý: giới từ đứng trước who, which

III. Cách viết câu dùng mệnh đề quan hệ
VD: The medicines was prescribed by the doctor. His name is Chien.
 B1: Xác định đối tượng cần bổ nghĩa: “the doctor”
B2: Xác định đại từ quan hệ: “whose”
B3: Viết lại câu: gộp 2 câu, thay chủ ngữ/tân ngữ trong câu bổ nghĩa thành đại từ
quan hệ.

VD2: This kind of interaction appear frequently. It is harmful for patient.

IV. Cách rút gọn mệnh đề quan hệ

1. Lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ khi who, that, which là tân ngữ.
- The nurse whom I talked to is single.
=> The nurse I talked to is single.
2. Dùng hiện tại phân từ (Ving) khi V chính trong MDQH ở dạng chủ động
- The drug which affects our body is a chemical
 The drug affecting our body is a chemical.
3. Dùng Quá khứ phân từ (Ved/Cột 3) khi V chính trong MDQU ở dạng bị động
The medicines are supplied to this hospital. They are antibiotics.
 The medicines supplied to this hospital are antibiotics.
4. Dùng to V
Penicillin was the first antibiotic. It was invented in 80s of last century.
- Penicillin was the first antibiotic to be invented.
