LAB NOTEBOOK 6

CPM 20966
Introduction

1. Open a new ArcMap document.

2. Save it as “Lab 06 Exercises”.


3. Connect Lab 06 dataset.
Add the data source

Steps

1. Go to “Add basemap”.

2. Add “Open street map” basemap.


3. “Open street” basemap will appear
4. Add “Polygon” layer from the Lab 06 dataset.

5. Select Gangodawila South and Gangodawila South B GNDs and export as a separate
layer Named “Boundary extracted”.
6. Remove fill colour to enable seeing. The area within the boundary.
7. Add new ”File Geodatabase”.
Digitise polygons features

Steps

1. Add new ”Feature class”.


2. Name it as ”Boundary_of_GNDs”.

3. Select type of feature as “Polygon Feature”.

4. Select the relevant coordinate system.


5. The new feature class will be authomatically added as a new layer under TOC

6. Attribute table shows no records.


Editor Toolbar

➢ Go to “Editor” toolbar

➢ Click on “Editor”.
➢ Click on ”Start editing”

➢ Select new feature class.

➢ Click ok.
➢ Click on “Create features”.
➢ Separate window will appear
➢ Click on the new feature class in the create feature window

➢ “Construction tools” will appear.


➢ Click on “Polygon”.
➢ Start digitising by putting points along the boudary.
➢ Once you are back in the start node, double click on that node to complete the
polygon.
➢ Click on “Edit tool” to edit nodes,
➢ When digitising is over, click on “Editor” and save edits and “stop editing” to
save your edits.
➢ This would be the newly digitised boundary map of the Gangodawila South GND.
Digitise point features

• Create a new feature class names “Restaurants”


• Select feature type as “Point feature”
• Click ok.
• Follow earlier steps.
➢ Digitise at least 2 – 3 points.
➢ Save and stop editing.
➢ Go to attribute table.
➢ Add new field named “Name”, type - text.
➢ Start editing in “Editor” toolbar.
➢ Add the two names of restaurants in the table.
➢ Change symbol colour
➢ Enable label features to show the names of the restaurants.
Digitise line features

➢ Create a new feature class names “Roads”


➢ Select feature type as “Line feature”

➢ Click ok.
➢ Follow earlier steps.
➢ Digitise at least two roads putting points.
➢ Save and stop editing.
➢ Go to attribute table.
➢ Add new field named “Name”, type - text.
➢ Start editing in “Editor” toolbar.
➢ Add the names of roads in the table.
➢ Final map should be exported in JPG format as a completed map.
➢ Your map should have more digitised features than in below map.
