Quartiles

From the word “quart” we have 4,

division by 4.
Like in our quarterly examination,
it is divided into 4 quarters, 1st
quarter, 2nd quarter...

Q1 Q2 Q3
Lower Quartile Median Upper Quartile
25% of data has a 50% of the data has 75% of the data has
value less than or a value less than or a value less than or
equal to Q1 equal to Q2 equal to Q3
Mendenhall and
Sincich Method
A method of Finding the Quartile
Value
Formula:
Lower Quartile (L): Q1 = 1/4 (N+1)
Median: Q2 = 1/2 (N+1)
Upper Quartile (U): Q3 = 3/4 (N+1)
N = Is the number of elements in
Data

Example:

The Manager of a food chain recorded the

number of customers who came to eat the
products in each day. The results were:
10,15,14,13,20,19,12 and 11
Quartiles for
Ungrouped Data
Steps to solve the Quartile of the given data
1. Arrange the data in ascending order
2. Find the N or the Total number of elements presented in
the Data

01
3. Find the lower quartile, median, and upper quartile of the
given data using Mendenhall and Sincich Method
4. Remember if Q1 is decimal, round of to the nearest
integer and if Q2 is decimal, round down to the nearest
integer
5. The difference between Upper Quartiler (Q3) and Lower
Quartile (Q1) is called Interquartile range.

Formula:
Lower Quartile (L): Q1 = 1/4 (N+1)
Median: Q2 = 1/2 (N+1)
Upper Quartile (U): Q3 = 3/4 (N+1)
N = Is the number of elements in Data

Steps to solve the Quartile of the given data

10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20

01
Lower Quartile (L): Q1 = 1/4 (N+1)
N=8

Q1 = 1/4 (8 + 1)
= 0.25 (9)
Q1= 2.25 round off to 3
Therefore, the Q1 is the 3rd element in the data which is 12

Steps to solve the Quartile of the given data

10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20

01 N=8
Median or the Middle Value: Q2 = 1/2 (N+1)

Q2 = 1/2 (8 + 1)
= 0.5 (9)
Q2= 4.5
Therefore, the Q1 is the 4.5th element in the data which is 13.5

Steps to solve the Quartile of the given data

10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20

01
Upper Quartile (U): Q3 = 3/4 (N+1)
N=8

Q3 = 3/4 (8 + 1)
= 0.75 (9)
Q3 = 6.75 round down to 6
Therefore, the Q1 is the 6th element in the data which is 15

Interquartile Range

01

Upper Quartile (Q3) - Lower Quartile (Q1)

Interquartile Range (IR) = 15 - 12
IR = 3
Therefore, the interquartile is 3

Lower Quartile (L): Q1 = 1/4 (N+1)
N = 11

Q1 = 1/4 (11 + 1)
= 0.25 (12)
Q1= 3
Therefore, the Q1 is the 3rd element in the data which is 9

Median: Q2= 1/2 (N+1)
N = 11

Q2 = 1/2 (11 + 1)
= 0.5 (12)
Q2= 6
