LESSON 1: PHILIPPINE LITERATURE UNDER US COLONIALISM (1898-1945)
Brief background
Spanish and Tagalog and the Vernaculars were the languages used in writing during the first
years of American Period and most of the writings depicted their love for country and longing
for independence.
Philippine literary production during the American Period in the Philippines was spurred by two
significant developments in education and culture.
Philippine literature in English, as a direct result of American colonization of the country, could
not escape being imitative of American models of writing especially during its period of
apprenticeship.
It was male dominated society during U.S. Colonialism, female voices in literature were not
taken seriously by the general public.
Period of Re-orientation (1898-1910)
1901 - El Renacimiento by Rafael Palma
1908 – Philippine Free Press
1907 – Sursum Gorda by Justo Juliano (first published work in English)
1909 – My Mother and Air Castles by Juan F. Salazar
1910 – English is the medium of instruction on public schools.
Period of Self Discovery (1925-1941) - Filipino writers acquired the mastery of English writing.
