Cluster of matter is an exhibition whereby a new narrative around the paleontological

heritage of the city of Metlaoui is introduced through drawings, installations and
videos. The exhibition presents a reinvented visual index that aims to embody the
paleontological richness of the southwest mining basin of Tunisia while capturing the
reality of highly exploited yet forgotten land.

This visual index regroups a register of speculations about the fauna and the flora
that could have existed, the cross-sectional layers of sedimentary matter that could
have survived and an altered replica of an archive that could have been preserved.
The visual speculation about emblematic specimens of the region asserts itself as a
way of criticizing the parts of history that were stolen under the cover of colonialism
and the pretense of scientific research.

The artistic approach of Bochra Taboubi relies on exploring landscapes, archives

and paleontological references to create reimagined phylum of specimens. As the
strata of the research came along with the strata of the depictions, the chimerical
creatures began to take shape allowing speculative lines to partake in a dialogue
aiming to shed the light on an emerging recognition about some buried
questions.These lines that intertwine with the past and the present, the historical and
the political, the real and the chimerical, the Art and Science, overlap with the lines
that could have traced a different story of the territory.

‫فهرسا مرئًيا تم إعادُة اختراعه يهدف إلى تجسيد‬
‫تركيبات فنية ومقاطع سمعية بصرية‪ .‬يقدم المعرض ً‬
‫ستغلة للغاية ولكنها‬
‫التراث الحفري بالحوض المنجمي في جنوب غرب تونس وعرض واقِع أرض ُم َ‬
‫منسية‪.‬‬

‫يجمع هذا الفهرس سجال ًلتخمينات حول الحيوانات والنباتات التي كان من الممكن أن تكون موجودة‪،‬‬
‫ومقاطع عرضية لطبقات المواد الرسوبية التي كان من الممكن أن تنُجو و نسخ معدلة من األرشيف الذي‬
‫كان من الممكن ا ِلحفاُظ عليه‪ .‬يتخذ هذا التخمين البصري للعينات الرمزية للمنطقة شكالً من أشكال النقد‬
‫حول أجزاء التاريخ المسروقة تحت غطاء االستعمار وبحجة البحث العلمي‪.‬‬

‫تعتمد المقاربة الفنية لبشرى الطبوبي على إستكشاف المناظر الطبيعية‪ ،‬األرشيفات والمراجع الحفرية‬
‫من أجل خلق إعادة َتصور لشعبة من العينات ومع ظهور طبقات البحث جنًبا إلى جنب مع طبقات‬
‫الرسوم التصويرية بدأت الكائنات التخمينية في التبلور سامحة للخطوط التخمينية بالمشاركة في حوار‬
‫يهدف إلى تسليط الضوء على بعض األسئلة المدفونة‪ .‬هذه الخطوط التي تجمع بين الماضي والحاضر‪،‬‬
‫التاريخي والسياسي‪ ،‬الحقيقي والخيالي‪ ،‬الفن والعلم‪ ،‬تتداخل مع الخطوط التي كان من الممكن أن ُتحيك‬
‫قصة مختلفة للمنطقة‪.‬‬

A chimerical creature sculpted on sedimentary matter interacting with acid mirroring
the effect of erosion on fossilized matter due to natural forces and human
exploitation.

Visual notes of a field research portraying a juxtaposition between "nature-

made"and "man-made" traces. Amid canyons , caves and relics of a colonial past,
the landscapes of the region have metamorphosed into history bearer fossils.

a video performance featuring a 1:2 scale 3D printed replica of the skeleton of

"Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus", an extinct and relinquished specimen from the region of
Gafsa immersed by the artist into a rivulet of phosphate waste emphasizing on the
‫‪ruinous interrelation between the excessive exploitation of the land and fossil‬‬
‫‪preservation.‬‬

‫‪Visual Artist, lives and works in Tunis. She is interested in organic forms, biomimicry‬‬
‫‪and the relationship between Human and Nature. These biological and philosophical‬‬
‫‪inquiries take the form of drawings, videos and installations. She mainly works on‬‬
‫‪artificial life and imaginary taxonomy with fictitious creatures to create her own‬‬
‫‪fabulatory repertoire that is questioning human’s issues.‬‬
