VI. ABSTRACTION
Background Information:

Most volcanoes around the world are located at special zones that are located around the
Pacific Ocean. It is commonly known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is where the most
distractive volcanoes are located.

Why do Volcanoes Erupt?

Under the volcanoes are hot molten rocks called magma. They are stored in a large pool under
the earth's surface known as magma chamber. These magmas contain dissolved gases. With
extreme heat and pressure on them, magmas rise to the
surface to erupt. Eruption can be quiet or violent and destructive.

If the magma is a thin fluid, the gases from the rising magma can escape easily. The lava flows
freely out of the vent down to its slopes releasing pressure evenly and constantly. Since
pressure doesn't build up, violent explosions do not occur. if the magma is thick and pasty, the
gases in the magma cannot move freely but will build up great pressure. Due to the high level
of pressure, violent eruption happens. The gases escape violently and throw out great masses
of solid hot rock as well as lava, dust, ashes and clouds of gas. There are volcanoes which
erupt violently because of the acidic lava they produce. Acidic lava cools very quickly upon
contact with the air. This tends to block the volcanic vent and block the escape of pressure.
When the pressure is high it blows away the lava that blocks the vent producing an explosive
eruption.

What causes earthquake?

The movement of magma under the earth's crust cause earthquake. The magma
pushes the rocks aside as it moves underground. The rocks break as they are
moved, releasing seismic energy which we call earthquake. Explosive eruption of
volcanoes cause earthquakes too because of the high pressure build up.

Considering the above information, the following are safety precaution measure before,
during and after earthquake and volcanic eruption.

FOLLOW UP QUESTION:
a. Based on our activities and from our discussion, what do we need to do before,
during and after an earthquake?
b. Why is it important to follow these safety precautions?
