B. Development
The Philippines has endeavored to improve its management of
solid waste through the passage of RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid
Waste Management Act that provides for a systematic,
comprehensive and ecological waste management program to ensure
the protection of public health and the environment
The ecological solid waste management program priorities
activities are the following:
 CLOSURE OF DUMPSITES; AND
 ESTABLISHMENT OF MATERIAL RECOVERY
FACILITIES (MRFS)

Solis waste can be classified into Biodegradable and Non-

biodegradable waste.

Here is the list of common household solid wastes. In which proper

garbage bin do they belong.

Tissue paper rotten banana

Tin can of sardines empty jar
Aluminum foil card board
Plastic straw egg shells
Old rag plastic bottles

WASTE MANAGEMENT USING THE 5Rs TECHNIQUES

1. Reduce - to limit or refuse the use of unnecessary materials.

Example: Buy rechargeable batteries instead of disposable
Buy products that have bigger packs

2. Reuse – to find other uses for materials that are already used.
Example: Reuse and repurpose container jars
Use old clothes as rags

3. Recycle – creating a new product out of a material that already

served its purpose.
Example: process old newspaper into cleaned paper

4. Repair- fix slightly broken things to be used again.

Example: damaged bags and shoes

5. Recover- take back materials that has ben used to a new material.
Example: Incineration-one way of generating energy from
wastes. It involves producing electricity by burning
garbage.
Recovering wastes also involves segregation. The garbage
collected are segregated in a Materials Recovery Facility where
garbage are sorted out according to class.

cross (x) the statement that does not tell the 5Rs.

D. Assimilation Why do 5Rs?

 Reduces waste disposal in landfills to 50%
 Save energy and natural resources
 Creates livelihood by recyclable collection
 Wealth recovery
 Recovery of energy, compost, biogas etc.
 Clean environment, less disease
The use of the 5Rs of waste is very important to help everyone
observe carefully the properties of matter before using any products.
Whatever you use, there will be always be waste. But important thing
is you should be mindful of how the amount of waste you generate
from using useful materials will affect you and the environment
