Traditional Medicine?
Hi, my name is Jorge. I live in Vundi a. Vundi a is a neighbourhood in Moamba district, about 100 km from Maputo. Here we don’t have any
hospitals, the nearest one is about 40 km away, in Mahulana. When we get ill, we don’t need to travel all that distance. We see the traditional
healers in our neighbourhood.
I see many advantages to visiting local traditional healers. We don’t have to wait in queues to be assisted. Generally, we don’t pay for the
consultations. The remedies they give us are from nature: leaves, from water, herbs. We just pay a symbolic amount of money, so we feel okay.
Apart from not paying much money, we think that traditional medicine is advantageous because we use natural remedies. We believe that chemical
remedies, like the ones people are giving in hospitals, are harmful to humans. If you take those remedies, they cure the illness limited period of
time. After some years or months, the person gets ill again because of the effects of chemical remedies.
Have you ever seen someone with cancer in the rural areas? Have you ever seen someone with thrombosis in the rural areas? People get
this disease because of all the chemical remedies they take when visiting modern doctors.
At the hospital people have to queue for ages. And in the end, they don’t have enough money to get the remedies or the medicines are not
available at the pharmacies. That’s the reason many people who visit medical doctors also visit traditional healers in the rural areas. Over weekend
or at night, we see many people coming from cities to see traditional healers.
Modern Medicine?
Hello, my name is Carla. I live in Xai – Xai City, Gaza province.
Well, when I am ill, I go to hospital because there I will get medical assistance from well-trained health technicians, nurses or
medical doctors. Before they prescribe the medicine I should take, they do a clinical examination during which they do a physical
examination am suffering from when they give me instructions on how to take a medicines, they take into account my height, weight
and the kind of diet I should follow.
I don’t like traditional medicine because some traditional healers are charlatan. They can´t cure what they claim they can. They also don’t
worry too much about a person´s background history. They seem to be focussed on the money. Traditional medicine generally tastes bitter.
Traditional healers don’t take responsibility if the remedies they give us have side effects. It is difficult for us to demand
responsibility because they do not have a fixed address. They tend to move from one area to another. They also claim that they can
cure all kind of diseases and later they blame our ancestors or neighbourhood for bewitching us. These accusations are never
confirmed.
