social, and economic constraints in schooling.

learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
Welcome to the English 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Use
Reflexive and Intensive Pronoun.
Pronouns are simply words that take the place of nouns. These words help improve
sentences by avoiding awkward repetitions of nouns. Pronouns are used in place of
nouns called antecedents. These are usually found together in sentences.
Antecedents can either come before or after the pronoun, within a sentence, or in a
sentence prior to the one that uses the pronoun.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
What I Need to Know

This module will assist you in encouraging the learners to share their personal
experiences, feelings and emotions using reflexive and intensive pronoun.
Please help the learners in sharing their ideas and knowledge from their
experiences so that there will be collaboration and learning will be easy.
Answers are written at the back of this module. Inculcate to the learners the
value of honesty while answering this module.
For the learner
Pronouns are words that take the place of a nouns so as not to make the
sentence cumbersome and repetitive. They usually refer to other words called their
antecedents, which come before the pronoun. An antecedent may either a noun or
another pronoun; either way, the use of pronouns must always be clear.

As a rule, pronoun should have only one possible antecedent. If there is more
than one, the writer must be able to clearly identify that the pronoun refers only to
one of them.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. differentiate reflexive and intensive pronouns
2. use reflexive and intensive pronoun in sentences
3. construct sentences using reflexive and intensive pronouns

What is It

Discussion of Activity 1

Notice that there are no such words as hisself, theirself, or theirselves. Let us
discover the usage of reflexive and intensive pronoun.

Subject Reflexive/Intensive Pronoun

I myself
you yourself
he himself
she herself
it itself
we ourselves
you (plural) yourselves
they themselves

A reflexive pronoun refers or reflects back to the subject of the sentence, indicating
that the same person or thing is involved. A reflexive pronoun always adds information to a
sentence.
Examples:
Paolo uses a stopwatch to time himself on the track.
We imagined ourselves dancing in a forest glade.

An Intensive pronoun adds emphasis to another noun or pronoun in the same

sentence. An intensive pronoun does not add information to a sentence. If the intensive
pronoun is left out, the sentence still has the same meaning. Often, but not always, an
intensive pronoun comes immediately after its antecedent.
Examples:
He himself delivered the flowers.
You must sign the application yourself.

Functions of Reflexive Pronoun

Reflexive Pronouns as Objects

Reflexive pronouns can be used as direct objects or indirect objects. A direct object, of
course, is when the subject does something to itself or the receiver of the action.

Michael hurt himself on the job.

Jillian introduced herself to her new puppy.
And you can use a reflexive pronoun as an indirect object as well.
Karen poured another glass of wine for herself to help chase away the blues.
The crowd cheered their team and congratulated themselves for attending the game.

Reflexive Pronouns and Prepositions

You should also use a reflexive pronoun after the preposition “by” when you are trying to
show that someone is doing something alone.

The goat made it out of the pen by itself.

The children made Sunday morning breakfast all by themselves.

Or you can even use the reflexive pronoun when showing someone doing something alone
without the use of the preposition “by.” In these cases, you could remove the reflexive
preposition altogether.

Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns, noun phrases, and other grammatical
forms. Intensive pronouns are pronouns that add emphasis to a statement. In English
grammar, intensive pronouns are identical in form to reflexive pronouns. Unlike reflexive
pronouns, however, intensive pronouns can be removed without altering the meaning or
grammaticality of a sentence. The nine intensive pronouns in English are:

 myself (first person singular)

 yourself (second person singular)
 himself (third person singular masculine)
 herself (third person singular feminine)
 itself (third person singular neuter)
 ourselves (first person plural)
 yourselves (second person plural)
 themselves (third person plural)
 oneself (indefinite)

Intensive pronouns perform two grammatical functions: appositive and adjunct adverbial.

Intensive Pronouns as Appositives

The first grammatical function performed by the intensive pronoun is the appositive.
Appositives are words, phrases, and clauses that support another word, phrase, or clause by
describing or modifying the other word, phrase, or clause. For example:
 I myself cooked the entire Thanksgiving meal.
 Edie knew that she herself could make a positive impact on the world.
 The presidents themselves made the big announcement.

Intensive pronouns functioning as appositives emphasize the antecedent.

Intensive Pronouns as Adjunct Adverbials

The second grammatical function performed by the intensive pronoun is the adjunct
adverbial. Adjunct adverbials are words, phrases, and clauses that modify an entire clause
by providing additional information about time, place, manner, condition, purpose, reason,
result, and concession. For example:
 I painted the entire house myself.
 He had been hanging the Christmas lights himself.
 We made the coffee ourselves.

Intensive pronouns functioning as adjunct adverbials often appear at the end of a sentence
and usually answer the question, “By whom-self?
