Arabic language is the language spoken by all Middle Eastern and
some African countries known as the Arabian countries, it is the language of
the Holy Qur’an. Therefore, for a Muslim to pronounce correctly and
understand perfectly the meaning of the Holy Qur’an he/she should study
this language.
Studying Arabic language is not just studying a language but a culture
too. Being the language of the Holy Qur’an it is also the language of Islam
and should be the language or at least read, pronounce correctly and
understand its meaning by all Muslims all over the world.
Arabic is written from right to left. The Arabic alphabet consists of
twenty-eight letters. Of these, twenty-five are consonants, one is a long
vowel, and two serve as long vowels as well as consonants.

The letter that represents a long vowel is named alif ( ‫ا‬ ) and
represents long a (ā). The letters which represents long vowels as well as
consonants, are wāw ( ‫ ) و‬which represents long u (ū) and the consonant w
as in wet, and yā ( ‫ ) ي‬which represents long i (ī) and the consonant y as in
you and yes.
Most of the Arabic letters are connected to each in writhing and these
are called the connecting letters. There are six letters that are connected to
other letters on the right side only, these are called handicapped or not
connected letters. These are:

Consequently, these letters among themselves remain unconnected, as
demonstrated in the following examples.

As the letters are connected to each other, each letter has four forms:
Initial, Medial, final and independent. Independent form is given first
followed by the other forms. On a computer keyboard that has Arabic
characters, only the independent form is seen on the key; as one types away,
the computer automatically chooses the correct form of the letter according
to its position.

Lesson 2: The Arabic Vowels

The Arabic vowels is represented by signs placed above or below the


letters, these signs are:
1. ____ this sign is called fat’hah. It represents a short a sound as in
fat. e.g, ‫ ز‬za.

To represent a long a (ā), an alif is added to the fat’hah, e.g., ‫ َزا‬zā.


2. ____ this sign is called kas’rah. It represents a short i sound as in

sin, e.g., ‫ز‬ zi.

To represent a long i (ī) a yā is added to the kas’rah, e.g. ‫ زي‬zi.


3. ’ this sign is called āham’mah. It represents a short u sound as
in put, e.g. zu.

To represent a long u (ū) a wāw is added to the āham’mah, e.g., ‫ُزو‬


zū.
4. º this sign is called sukūn. It represents the absence of vowel, e.g.,

‫ز ْز‬ zaz, ziz , ‫ز ْز‬ .

5. ّّ this sign is called shad’dah . it indicates doubling of a

consonant, e.g., ‫زز‬ in ‫ز ْزز‬ zazza, or ‫زز‬ in ‫ز ْزز‬ zizzu…etc. remove


the sukūn letter and place shad’dah to the other letter to represent
the removed one, if the kas’rah and the shad’dah appear together,

the kas’rah is placed below the shad’dah, e.g., ‫ز ّز‬ it can also be

placed below the letter, e.g., ‫ ز ّز‬.

6. ًّ or ٍّ or ٌّ are called tanween (doubled vowel), when the


fat’hah, kas’rah and ḍam’mah at the end of the word an n-sound is
added to the pronunciation of these vowels, e.g.

‫زز‬ zazi but ‫ز ٍز‬ zazin

‫زز‬ zaza but ‫ز ًزا‬ zazan

Note: in the case of double fat’hah, an alif is added at the end of


the word, however, it is not pronounced. Double āham’mah is

written like this ٌّ

Note:
The alif without the sign of the hamzah is called hamzat al-wasl. It is
pronounsced only when it is not preceded by another word. When proceeded.
It is dropped in pronounciation, but not in writing. To indicate its omission

this ‫ ٱ‬is placed above it as you see in above exercises. In words with lunar al,
the alif is not pronounced, while in words with solar al both the alim and the
lam are not pronounced.

This is called the round ta or ta al-maboutah, it occurs only at the end

Introduction to Arabic Grammar
Basic Concepts

Syntax [‫]النحو‬: a study of the case endings of words, whether they are
ْ
declined or underlined, and word order within a sentence. A few
orthographical rules are also provided, as they are appropriate at this stage
of learning.

Orthography [‫]النالء‬: Relating to the internal structure of a word, the


ْ
letterforms used in writing and how they are sometimes related to other
words in the sentences.

Morphology [ ‫]الصرف‬: a study of the ways in which a word and its


ْ
various derivatives are formed, depending on the meaning intended by the
speaker.

Conjugation [‫]التصريف‬: a study of the various ways in which verbs are


ْ ْ
conjugated to describe an action that occurs, or is due to occur, in a

particular time frame. It is divided into three tenses – the past [‫]ا ْلمَضي‬,

imperfect and future [‫]ا ْلمضَرع‬. To these we must add such derivative forms

as the imperative [‫اْلنر‬ ‫]صيغة‬, negation [ٌ‫]سْنكرة‬, request [ ], obligation [ ],


ْ ْ
prohibition, etc…, which are derived from the imperfect.

In Arabic grammar, morphology and conjugation both come under

[‫]الصرف‬. However, in order to help students distinguish between the two.

As-sarf is used in this book to indicate morphology, and at-tasrif to indicate
conjugation.

The Sentence [‫]ٱ ْلجملة‬: unlike other languages, in Arabic sentences can
ْ
be either nominal or verbal, giving the speaker/user freedom to choose the
first word in a sentence.

The nominal sentence [‫سمنية‬


ْ ‫ ]ٱ ْلج ْملة ٱل‬is one which begins with a
noun, while verbal sentence [ ‫ ]ٱ ْلجملة ٱ ْلفعلية‬is one which begins with a verb.

The nominal sentence is made up of two basic elements.

1. ‫ ٱ ْلمبتدأ‬or the subject: this can be a definit noun or a pronoun.

2. ‫ ٱ ْلخبر‬or the predicate: it must always a definite noun, be it single

word or a phrase. Speaker can add as many words as he/she wish


to extend the context of nominal sentence using extra adjectives or
objects, etc.
