New Skills
The teacher will discuss what the students have written
on the board and will be guided by this content:

A non-communicable disease, or NCD, is a medical

condition or disease which by definition is non-
infectious and non-transmissible among people.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), also known as

‘diseases of the riches or chronic diseases. They are of

discussion)

The 3 main types of noncommunicable diseases are

cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke),
cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic
obstructed pulmonary disease and asthma) and
diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term that

describes a disease of the heart or blood vessels. Blood
flow to the heart, brain or body can be reduced because
of a: blood clot (thrombosis), build-up of fatty deposits
inside an artery, leading to the artery hardening and
narrowing (atherosclerosis)

Chronic respiratory diseases are diseases of the airways

and other structures of the lung. Some of the most
common are asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), occupational lung diseases and
pulmonary hypertension. In addition to tobacco smoke,
other risk factors include air pollution, occupational
chemicals and dusts, and frequent lower respiratory
infections during childhood.

Chronic respiratory diseases are not curable. However,

various forms of treatment that help dilate major air
passages and improve shortness of breath can help
control symptoms and increase the quality of life for
people with the disease.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs. Each kidney

is about the size of a fist. Your kidneys filter extra water
and wastes out of your blood and make urine. Kidney
disease means your kidneys are damaged and can’t
filter blood the way they should.

You are at greater risk for kidney disease if you have

diabetes or high blood pressure. If you experience
kidney failure, treatments include kidney transplant or
dialysis. Other kidney problems include acute kidney
injury, kidney cysts, kidney stones, and kidney infections.
