SPORTS: NARRATIVE
As a kid, I grew up being interested learning different things. May it be in music, arts,
other languages, or sports. During my elementary and junior high school days I was a school
varsity for Badminton but it stopped when I reached senior high school because I was interested
in another thing. Despite that, I still have profound knowledge for the sport but my body is left
behind as I begun to gain weight and have become rusty in terms of skills.
The two sessions of Wellness Recreational Program (WRP) sports that I attended were
both Badminton, I decided to take this sport due to the fact that it has been a few years that I
have played the sport and I want to experience or hone my skills all over again. I was kind of
afraid to try the sport again because I have always been so proud of being a varsity in badminton
representing my school but knowing that I am not as good as I was before terrified me.
The same as other WRP schedules, it all starts on the introductions where the instructors
introduce themselves and their achievements which led their employment in FEU as instructors.
Then they will proceed to ask the participants or students attending the session if they have any
illness, prior surgeries and fractures, and disabilities. This is to ensure the safety of the students
by preventing injuries to ever happen when they get to perform drills, physical activities, and
exercises. The following procedure is the warm-up, the intensity of the warm up is only light
since the sport itself is strenuous.
After the warm-up, we were tasked to form two lines, both lines will compete with each
other but the unique thing is we will only be able to hit the shuttlecock once or twice depending
if you are the one serving or receiving. If the student is serving s(he) will hit twice, if they are
receiving, they are only allowed to hit once. After they are able to hit, they will proceed to the
back of the line and wait for their turn again.
The game was interesting but I don’t think it gave students enough time to master any
skills because it is insufficient and the numbers of students are many compared to the size of the
court. Despite those, it still went well and it was a fun game because the competitiveness each
student is showing, how each of them will celebrate or wail at the loss of points.
Lastly, cool down. Similar to warm-up, it is light and short, the main focus of it is to
stretch the muscles of the students to prevent muscle aches afterwards. After the cool down, the
instructor made us sit down so she can finalize the attendance to see if ever someone sneak out
during the WRP session.
