Introduction

“Training sessions are vital to the learning process, but they are only

one step in the learning process and this should never be forgotten.” —

Ravinder Tulsiani.

On-the-job training is very important not only to teach students their

chosen careers but to show students the reality of the competitive working

environment, and enhance students' working capabilities. According to Engr.

Aasma, On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a form of training that involves hands-on

learning in a real-world work environment. In the context of students, OJT

refers to a structured program that provides students with the opportunity to

work in a company or organization and gain practical experience in their field

of study. OJT programs can be found in a variety of industries and sectors,

including healthcare, manufacturing, education, and technology.

The more you learn, the more you possess the necessary skills, and

that can create opportunities for personal learning. Not only do you contribute
to an effective and productive environment but also to a satisfied workforce.

With that, it facilitates teamwork and communication between the people you

are working with.

As OJT students, we are required to do four hundred hours (400) of

training. All of us are free to choose where we would want to undergo our

training. Almost all of us wanted to go to our target company or any place we

wanted to. In my case, I chose to stay at our school since it is convenient for

us to attend our remaining classes and at the same time finish our training.

We are divided into different offices and I was chosen to take my training at

the Cashier’s Office. The office is open from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm every

Monday to Friday to cater different needs of its stakeholders. Sometimes they

do overtime if some transactions and reports are needed to be passed on

time.
Description of Work Performed

Week 1

In the first
week of my training, we were getting acquainted with each other.

They taught us to be familiar with the task that are given to us so that we can

work on our own without their supervision. They required us to clean the office

every morning and mop the dirty floors to work in a comfortable space. They

reminded us to water the plants every Monday and Friday. Afterward, I was

taught to separate the official receipts, paid the vouchers, and have them

signed by the head of the office. It was only four days of duty there was no

office on Friday. I completed thirty-two (32) hours of my four hundred (400)

hours of prescribed training during my first week of OJT.

Week 2

In week two of my training, I have done the same routinary work as the

1st week. I was taught how to file the reports according to cheque no. and fund

no. I assisted in making the reports. I separated duplicated copies of official

receipts. After that, I made some advice and forwarded some reports and

documents to other offices. Overall, I was on duty for forty (40) hours in the

second week.

Week 3

In week three of my training, I have done routine work such as cleaning

and watering the plants. I assist the payers outside the office to maintain

order. Then, I encoded reports and stamped vouchers. We also recounted the

money that was withdrawn for the disbursement of the scholarships. I have

completed 40 hours of my training in the third week.

Week 4

In week four of my training, I worked for 4 days with 32 hours on duty. I

have done the same thing. I cleaned the tables and arrange the chairs for the

distribution of scholarships. I stamped vouchers and checked the official

receipts. I was also tasked to answer telephone calls. I was absent that Friday

since I attended our CBA day.

Week 5

In week five of my training, I was assisting with a lot of reports at the

same time and have done routine work, cleaning the office after I arrived early

in the morning. I separated duplicated and triplicated copies of official

receipts. I made some advice and was tasked to assist in the making of

reports. From Monday to Friday, I completed a total of forty (40) hours long on

duty.

Week 6

In my week six of training, I worked on the same task given to me. After

I mopped the floors clean, I separated duplicated and triplicated copies of

official receipts. After that, I stamped vouchers, forwarded reports, and

assisted with the reports. On Thursday, I was absent since I attend a program

required by our department. On Friday I was tasked to answer telephone

calls. It was 4 days of work and I completed thirty-two (32) hours in week six.

Week 7

In my week seven of training, I was tasked to do the reports. I am

working 2 days with 16 hours of training. I was tasked to separate the

duplicated and triplicated copies of official receipts. Afterward, I assisted in

making reports and forwarded them to the respective offices. Assisted clients

who wanted to claim their checks. It was two (2) days of training, a total of

sixteen (16) hours in week seven (7). I was absent on Wednesday and it was

a special non-working holiday on Thursday and Friday because of the holy

week.

Week 8

In my week eight of training, I was tasked to do the same work. I

stamped vouchers, separated duplicated and triplicated copies of official

receipts, and made some advice. There was no office on Monday since it was

still a special non-working holiday. I worked for 4 days, 32 hours in week

eight.

Week 9

In week nine of my OJT, I have done routine work. After I cleaned the

office and wiped the windows, I separated duplicated and triplicated copies of

official receipts that were accumulated the other day. I stamped vouchers and

assisted with the reports. Then we checked official receipts that will be used

the next day. It was 5 days of training with 40 hours in total for the ninth (9th)

week.
Week 10

In week ten of OJT, I assisted with various work. It was the same work

they required me to do. Ma’am Jing asked me to help her in making reports of

official receipts last October 2022. I answered telephone calls and prepared

salaries for job orderlies. It was 5 days of training with 40 hours total in week

ten.

Week 11

In my week eleven of training, I assisted with the reports. I separated

duplicated and triplicated copies of official receipts and checked original,

duplicated, and triplicated copies of official receipts. It was 3 days of training,

a total of twenty-four 24 hours in week eleven.

Week 12

In the 12th week and the last week of my training. I was tasked to do a

lot of reports. I finished the reports of official receipts last October 2022. I

started doing the reports for November 2022. We finished checking a box of

official receipts. I also stamped vouchers and forwarded reports to respective

offices. It was 5 days of training with 40 hours in total for the final week.
Principles, Concepts, and Skill

As an OJT student, I need to show skills and acquire and develop more

while learning my way around my chosen field. With all that, we need to take

action together with the principles we believed in and follow. When working

we must be responsible for our actions. If things go wrong you need to act

accordingly and accept mistakes but remember to learn from them. Another

one is, to be honest in every way, mostly concerning money. Be righteous and

well-mannered when dealing with your clients and superiors.

On-the-job training is commonly required by every school. It teaches

every student to be ready in a professional environment. It can assimilate a

new workforce, boost the confidence of future employees and create a team

that can work together. As it goes, you may discover your strength to help

contribute to the improved working environment and weaknesses that need to

be developed into strengths. The more students learn of their roles and

responsibilities, they can gain a closer insight into the job they will take in the

future. Most of all, if things don't go as planned it is important to think critically

about the solutions

, hence, decision-making skills take a great role in the work system.

Communication skill is also important, you need to assist different

clients and answer telephone calls. Having initiative is an important skill that

was highly appreciated by your co-workers and superiors. One should know

how to adapt and fit in with co-workers and superiors for a harmonious and

healthy workplace. You must also be persistent in doing your job right and be

self–disciplined to do it properly and independently within the prescribed

timeframe.

Major Learnings

One of the important things I have learned is that you need to be skillful

in any area. Being skillful is important but also being well-mannered and

having initiative will most likely help. Also, being punctual and flexible is

appreciated in the industry. During my duration of training, I have encountered

a glimpse of what a real-life working environment is. It was not easy as I have
expected it to be. You need to know how to handle your time and finish the

assigned task as quickly as possible and with precision. Also, you are not

entirely working for one specific job, you need to learn a lot of work and know

your way around, and be prepared to do whatever task they asked you to do

that is the essence of being flexible and working under the pressure of time.

In my 400 hours of training, I have learned that you need to be nice

and communicable in dealing with clients even when they are hostile toward

you. Proper treatment of the clients greatly affects the office positively and

gaining good feedback is everything. I practiced my skills in encoding,

assisting, and filling a lot of reports during the 15 th and the end of the month. I

improved in using computers and printers which will fully help me when I

venture into my future career. I have learned making advice on the vouchers

and checks that need to be sent afterward to other offices. Most importantly, in

terms of money, we learned the value of being responsible and doing our job

properly in collecting and recounting money.

Personal Feelings and Observation

During my first day of OJT, I was nervous and my heart beats like

crazy. I was not sure if they will like me and if I could handle a lot of pressure

during my training. I was shaking so badly that they took notice and told me
to relax and don't get too nervous. I was not confident during my first day at

work since I was struggling to know how to start the task they had assigned

me to do. To be honest, I don't even know how to photocopy documents since

I am not exposed to photocopying machines and how they work. I was feeling

awkward with the presence at the workplace since it was my first time meeting

and working with them. At the same time, I feel a little awkward with the other

OJTs that I am not acquainted with. As days passed by, I am starting to get

around and adapt to the working environment and I learned to work with a

team.

Being a trainee is so tiring since I had to wake up early and wear

suitable attire for work, it was uncomfortable since I am required to wear a

skirt and heeled shoes. Not only that, I needed to attend my classes after

office hours. My everyday routine was exhausting. After I got home I need to

do my laundry and answer activities given by my professors. We also excused

ourselves at work if we had an exam. It was multitasking in every possible

way because we had no choice but to double our efforts to finish what was

required of us. It was great working with them and I am happy that I've

learned a lot during my 400-hour training.

Company Profile

The University of Antique, formerly known as Polytechnic State College

of Antique (PSCA) and Antique School of Arts and Trades (ASAT), was

established under RA 857 approved on January 19, 1954, through the efforts

of the late Cong. Tobias A. Fornier.

UA has humble beginnings. A five-room building made of bamboo and

nipa was all it had a few months after it was established. Indeed, it was not

made to last a decade. In July 1956, typhoon “Delta” destroyed it to the

grounds, yet the destruction of the building did not crush nor dampen the spirit

of unrelenting teachers and staff under the supervision of Superintendent

Fermin Taruc Jr.

The beginnings of this institution may be humble, yet the people who

founded it and strived hard to make it grow are illustrious.

One of the greatest achievements of Cong. Tobias Fornier in his stint

as a representative to Congress, for which he is greatly and strongly

remembered, is ASAT. The school did not have a permanent site and building

hence, Mayor Santiago A. Lotilla immediately took the initiative in donating

land where the school is now permanently located. Many benevolent

Sibalomnons followed suit. When construction commenced, men and women

work in shifts, all generous with their time, effort, material resources, and

moral support.
The founding years were the time of big dreams and an Indomitable

spirit to pursue these dreams. The struggles to overcome the challenges of

clearing the grounds, leveling the hills, steadying the posts, rebuilding

devastated structures, and providing enough accommodation to the growing

numbers of students were never more than the determination and fortitude of

the pioneer administrators, teachers, students, supporters, and the

community. Among the administrators and important people responsible for

securing the foundations of the school was Supt. Hilarion Agustin, Supt. Gil

Tenefrancia, Supt. Rogelio Cachuela and Supt. Victor Blacer.

The turbulence in the political scenario in the 70s and changing tides of

sociocultural events shook the foundation of young schools like ASAT. Yet,

instead of giving in to the menace, ASAT was propelled to function. In the

1970s, the school specialized in ceramics, a field that added reason for its

existence. ASAT rose to prominence when it was acclaimed as one of the best

ceramic schools in the country. The creativity of Mr. Donato Jr. was given the

honor. Behind him was the support of the people like Supt. Adriano S.

Sullesta, and Mr. Teopisyo Umpad.

The school was like a humble day, supple and formless, yet when In

the hands of an artist, it became a masterpiece. The artistry of the

Sibalomnons was expressed in the production of figurines and pottery. Art,

like any other noble pursuit of noble minds, gave wings to the spirit of

exploration and higher achievement. Towards the end of 70's Supt. Godofredo
E. Gallega was given the reins of administering ASAT after the term of Supt.

Adriano Sullesta.

With the support of Assemblyman Arturo F. Pacificador who passed

Batas Pambansa Blg. 912, ASAT took an ambitious step. It was converted into

a college on November 14, 1982, and from then on, it was known as

Polytechnic State College of Antique. The conversion of the school is not only

the change in its name but it also dared more impressive changes in its

buildings, grounds, physical structure, facilities, and equipment. It enjoyed

improvements in curricular offerings, structure and administration, faculty

qualifications and training programs, and programs and thrust.

The decade of conversion was a time of renewed visions and

directions. It was the time of hope. It was a happy era of cultural revival as

well as a euphoric decade of freedom fought in. The byword of the '90s was

expansion. This expansion was not only in the college's growing population,

curricular offerings, and facilities but also in its thrust and programs. The idea

of expansion brought with it the challenge of accreditation.

The seven areas of its operation were expanded into twelve and later

on, were subjected to closer scrutiny to bring the college to the level of

excellence. This was the time that the word "excellence" was taken to heart

and made an ever-present tenet in school life. It was a time when the

meaning of excellence made the essence of its existence. It was also the

centennial of the Philippine Revolution, thus, awakening the nationalistic spirit

of the majority of the citizens.

The decade was not only the expansion of thrusts, from mere

Instruction to the triumvirate of instruction, research, and extension but also

the years when tertiary schools were integrated with PSCA, thus giving birth

to daughter campuses in Hamtic (formerly ACA) and Tibiao then TLMASOF.

The year 2000 is the year of jubilee, the turn of the new century, and

the ushering of the new millennium. The citizens rejoiced in having reached a

new epoch of eternity, they rejoiced that PSCA has turned fifty!

Time has passed swiftly, and PSCA was invigorated with a new vision

and hope. The last struggles and victories strengthen them as they rejoice in

their success. They were ready to take the leap to reach university status. In

the past, PSCA is never alone in its dreams. Former congressman Jovito

Plameras helped PSCA shape this dream which was later pursued by Cong.

Exequiel B. Javier.

Meanwhile, on March 2005, Dr. Godofredo E. Gallega was appointed

president of TCP-Manila; therefore, Dr. Benny Palma the ASU President then

temporarily served as OIC President until Dr. Victor E. Navarra was chosen as

the second President and assumed his duty on March 25, 2006.

The struggle In converting UA into a University continued for many

years even during the time of Gov. Salvacion Z. Perez.

Finally, on November 10, 2009, during the incumbency of

Congressman Exequiel B. Javier, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed RA

9746, converting PSCA into the University of Antique. At last, the dream has
come to reality. It was a very glorious day for the UA community and for

Antiqueños as a whole.

Since its conversion into a university, UA's population has increased

significantly; thus, this requires more instructors, more classrooms, and other

facilities to accommodate the increasing number of students and the demands

of the people.

UA is undergoing a lot of changes and development. It envisions

becoming a leading university.

With the passion and enthusiasm of the pioneers; the cooperation of all

sectors in the community; and the benevolence of the late Mayor Santiago A.

Lotilla and municipal officials, a site for the school was acquired and the

dream of having a school that will provide quality education to Antique’s youth

was realized. On the site, a five-room building made of nipa and bamboo was

constructed to serve as classrooms for the students.

The first classes were formally opened on July 1, 1954, with 188

Secondary Trade and 53 Trade –Technical Education Students. The first

courses offered were Ceramics, Auto mechanics, Furniture and Cabinet-

Making, Building Construction, and Food Trades.

As the school grew, more courses were offered to answer the need for

employment and global competitiveness. These programs include Doctor of

Philosophy, Doctor of Public Administration, Master of Education, Master of

Public Administration, Master of Science, and Master of Arts in Education. In

the Higher Education Curriculum, the courses offered are BS Secondary

Education, Bachelor in Elementary Education, BS SPED, BS Industrial

Education, BS Business Administration, BS Marketing, BS Management

Accounting, BS Marine Engineering, BS Marine Transportation, BS

Community Development, BS Industrial Technology, BS Computer Science,

BS Electronics and Communications Engineering, BS Electrical Engineering,

BS Criminology, BS Hotel and Restaurant Management, AB Political Science,

AB Psychology, and Seafarers Rating Course.

The 90s was a decade of expansion for the school. This expansion

was not only apparent in PSCA's growing population, curricular offerings, and

facilities but also in its thrusts and programs. Aside from the main campus in

Sibalom, PSCA extended its pursuit of quality education in other areas of the

province. The then Tario Lim Ruiz Memorial-Antique School of Fisheries

became the PSCA Tibiao Campus and the Antique College of Agriculture

became the Hamtic Campus. The expansion era blossomed and satellite

campuses in Libertad and Caluya were also established.

The Idea of expansion also brought the idea of accreditation. This was

the time when the aim for excellence became a challenge for all the

constituents of PSCA. The College of Education brought glory to the

institution for its exemplary performance in the Licensure Examination for

Teachers (LET) and for passing the level II accreditation.

As a growing university, UA has tried to improve its curricular offerings,

facilities, and equipment to address the needs of the students. Apparently, the

need to accommodate more students who desire a place for learning paved

the way for the provision of additional buildings, more classrooms, and

modern facilities.
The passage of time has become a witness to the challenges the

school has met from its foundation as ASAT; its growth as PSCA; and its

maturity as UA. The University of Antique is living proof of a journey from a

humble beginning to a dynamic and illustrious future. With its unrelenting

effort to provide quality education and to improve its services to its clientele,

the University of Antique plays an indispensable role in the progress of the

province and undoubtedly remains Antique's pride.

Application of Theories

For the past years, I became grounded in the fact that there is always

room to grow and learn, and to see circumstances as something that could

shape me best. Now, that I was required to do on-the-job training, I seek this

experience as something that could harness my skills and a chance to learn

from people who are experts in the field. Punctuality is one thing I always

observed during my training. Pressure is present in any workplace, I learned

to handle and work under it so I could finish my tasks promptly. I do what was

assigned to me in line with the values the organization upholds. I learned to

be adaptable and take on the challenge of working on things I am not well

versed in because I am expected to get the work done. I opened myself to

changes and criticisms as one must take many of them to learn and improve.

Time management is also needed to work on tasks efficiently and not cause a

delay in the office's function. Developing communication skills may boost

better engagement and team collaboration. You also need to be willing to put

effort into improving yourself and extend your scope of expertise. To be

honest and encourage trust among employees and motivate the workplace in

performing efficiently. Lastly, you need to be polite with each one you

encounter may it be your boss, workmate, or the people you serve with, to

keep order and understanding in creating a positive workplace.

Observation and Concerns

With a lot of staff and professors in the university, the scope of service

is large, yet the office maintained a harmonious relationship with its client.

They put effort into meeting what is expected of them. Handling a lot of work,

preparing reports, and assisting clients is tiring, however, the will to serve is

invigorating. I look up to these people and wondered how they managed to

deal with all the work. Sometimes they would work overtime to meet

deadlines. I can say that everyone performed their function well in the best

interest of the clients. Being with them was never boring, laughter always

surrounds the office.

I am grateful that they are willing to teach us important details of the

work. They openly give positive or even negative feedback

without offense.
Working in the office is a handful, there is a lot of pressure to finish the

work assigned to you, on a positive note, pressure shapes a diamond. Sure,

there are things noteworthy working under these pressures.

Recommendations

During and after my training, I have gained insight into the on-the-job

training at our designated workplace.

The Cashier's Office at the University of Antique-Main Campus

provides all-around training that aims to develop the skills of every student in

any aspect. The staff are cooperative and supportive and are willing to impart

to us their expertise.

The workplace has tools, equipment, and computers which can be a

handful all the time and make work easy. They wanted us to explore different

functions which are beneficial to us. To be able to work in different functions

helps in expanding our grasp of office work. It was a busy office catering to

different queries and concerns which is why work queues.

For the future student trainee, remember to be courteous, focused, and

give your best. Do not idle and take the initiative to perform your function.

They gave you the job because they believe you can do it. Be confident

because it leaves an impression.
