Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9

Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of the basic concepts of

trigonometry.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to apply the concepts of trigonometric ratios to
formulate and solve real-life problems with precision and accuracy.
Learning Competency and Code: The learner illustrates angles of elevation and angles of
depression. (M9GE-IVd-1)

Quarter: FOURTH Week: FOUR Day: ONE

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:
1. define angle of elevation and angle of depression; and
2. identify segment that represents the line of sight and angles that represent the
angle of elevation or angle of depression.
II. Content:
Subject Matter: Angles of Elevation and Angles of Depression
Integration:
Learning Area (English)
Strategies: Discussion Method and Collaborative Learning
Materials: Visual Aid and Activity Sheets
References: Mathematics 9 – Learner’s Material
III. Learning Tasks:

Preliminary Activities:
 Prayer, Greetings, Checking of Attendance

A. Elicit
 Group the students into five groups.
 Each group will be given a manila paper and marker pen, and an envelope which
has 5 scrambled words.
 The students will be given 3 minutes to answer the activity. They will then paste
their answers on the board, every correct answer the group will be given points.

Activity: ARRANGE ME! Answer Key:

1. GLEAN 1. Angle
2. NIOTELVEA 2. Elevation
3. SIONPEDSRE 3. Depression
4. NILE 4. Line
5. GHTIS
5. Sight

B. Engage
The same group will perform the activity. Each group will roam around inside the
classroom and find an object that is at the exact height as their eyes and write it on
the activity sheet. After that, they will go outside the classroom and list five things
that are taller than them and five things that are shorter than them.

47
LIST
Object that is at the exact height as your
eyes.
Five objects that are taller than you.
Five objects that are shorter than you.

Guide Questions:
 How did you find the activity?
 When you look up to tall objects is there an angle formed?
 When you look down (shorter objects) is there an angled formed?
 Do you think you can directly measure the height, the distance of the
object you have listed in the activity?

C. Explore
Using the same groups, they will do the activity called MATCH ME! where they
are going to determine correct description of the following words. They will share
their answer to the class.

LINE OF SIGHT - Is the angle from the horizontal

to the line of sight of the
ANGLE OF ELEVATION observer to the object below.
- Is the angle from the horizontal
ANGLE OF DEPRESSION to the line of sight of the
observer to the object above.
- Is an imaginary line that
connects the eye of an observer
to the object being observed.

D. Explain
The teacher will further discuss the concept of angles of elevation and angles of
depression.

DEFINITIONS:
 Line of sight is an imaginary line that connects the eye of an observer to
the object being observed.
 The angle of elevation is the angle from the horizontal to the line of sight
of the observer to the object above.
 The angle of depression is the angle from the horizontal to the line of
sight of the observer.

E. Elaborate
The same group will do the activity IDENTIFY ME!
Instruction: Identify the segment that represents the line of sight and identify the
angles (if any) that represent the angle of elevation or angle of depression.

F. Evaluate
In a ¼ sheet of paper, identify the segment that represents the line of sight and the
angles that represent the angle of elevation or angle of depression.

G. Extend
Give one example of real-life situation where you can apply the concept of angle
of elevation and angle of depression.
