The objective of this method statement is to ensure that the Excavation,

Backfilling and Compaction are complying with standard requirements.

2.0 Scope of Work

This procedure is issued to describe the work processes involved in
construction of the excavation of concrete structure foundations, and other
facilities. The latest revision of the PROJECT specifications shall be used as

references and is part of this Method Statement in the execution of work.

3.0 References
 Project Specifications
 ASTM D 1556
 ASTM D 1557

4.0 Safety Requirements

4.1 All safety precautions required shall be fully implemented,
and observed during work execution.
4.2 Only authorized and designated personnel shall conduct and complete
the work as required.
4.3 All signboards, barricades and warning signs shall be posted and
Maintained in the working areas as required.
4.4 Personnel protective equipment (PPE) shall be provided and used at
All The time
4.5 Safe entry and exit access shall be provided and always free from
Any obstructions at all times.

5.0 Key Personnel Duties and Responsibilities

5.1 The Project Manager is the over-all in-charge for the implementation of this
procedure and ensure that his team are aware of this Method Statement. He
should also ensure that all resources needed in the work execution shall be
available and carry out the work as planned without delays and in a safe
manner.

5.2 The Site Manager is responsible in the coordination with site supervisor and
foremen for a safe and proper execution of the works.
5.3 Site Engineer and General F/M are directly reporting to the Site Manager.
They should ensure that the works are carried out in accordance with the
approved drawings, applicable standards and this Method of Statement.
5.4 QC Inspector in close coordination with site personnel shall ensure that the
works are carried out based from the QC project requirements. He is
responsible in conducting and monitoring QC inspection works. Additionally,
he shall ensure that all pertinent QC documentations and records are
prepared and ready for approval.
5.5 Safety Officer is responsible in monitoring the full implementation of all
safety procedures and safety measures at site at all times. Communication
with the Safety Representative is also part of his responsibility.

6.0 Job Safety Analisys

6.1 An open cut type of excavation shall be applied with safe side slopes.
6.2 Shoring and bracing system shall be used whenever required to protect
adjacent structure if any, in an excavation site or when the excavation
side slope is steeper than those mention below.
6.3 Suitable and appropriate excavator and compacting equipment shall be
used to carry out the works.
6.4 Safe angle and clearance of excavation:
The entire excavation slope shall be as per project specification of
excavation specification. Angle =45° is applied to major soil strata found
in the Plant site. Clearance of 1.0 meter from excavation top edge to
barricade shall always be kept.
6.5 Excavated soil material will be removed immediately from the work site
and equipment shall be kept away from the excavation top edge.
6.6 All access walkways, Ramps, Stair & Bridges shall be equipped with guard
rails. All Walkway crossings shall be equipped with tightly secured
uniformly sized planking. There shall always be a safe access way for
entry and exit. For excavations that are long, there shall be an access
way as per requirements.
6.7 First aid facility will be available entire the period in the work site.

7.0 Work Procedure

7.1 Verify the detail of excavation according to the latest Issued for Construction
(IFC) drawing before the start of the work. Conduct a survey and mark the location
and limits of the area to be excavated. Allowance should be provided to have
enough working space between the foundation to be constructed and the edge of
the bottom of the excavation for the personnel and forms, bracing and supports to
be installed. In marking the excavation limits, consideration should also be given for
additional area to accommodate side slopes of the excavation.

7.2 Determine the depth of the excavation from the existing ground taking
reference from the latest IFC drawing.

7.3 Coordinate with other disciplines involved, to verify any existing

service/utility lines such as water line, power line and telephone line running through
boundaries of excavation is mandatory before starting work.

7.4 All excavations shall be hard barricaded at all times.

7.5 Use mechanical excavator whenever possible and if the site condition
permits. Excavation permit will be obtained before starting the work. Excavate
manually around existing structure or in congested area where the use of power
machines are not possible.

7.6 Barricade shall be placed around the machine operation area.

7.7 Where the excavation site is close to the existing structures, sufficient shoring
and bracing system shall be planned and approved by safety department and then
built against the excavation wall to prevent any possible collapse of the excavation
slope and also damage to the structures. Where the excavation extends below the
foundation of existing adjacent structures well planned and approved measures to
protect that structure must be provided.

7.8 Excavate up to the desired level, width and length as required to conform to
the latest IFC drawing. The vertical tolerance shall be as per specification.

7.9 When the desired bottom elevation is reached, level and compact the ground
by using an appropriate machine such as roller, jumper or plate compactors up to the
required density to confirm with the Project Specification requirements.

7.10 Remove and replace with compacted suitable fill, any sort of contaminated
soil, if any, found at excavation bottom.

7.11 Backfilling will commence only after completion of inspection and test of
below grade structures is complete

7.12 Structural fill or backfill placed beneath footings, grade beams, mat
foundations, or any settlement sensitive structure shall be compacted to at least 95
percent of maximum dry density as determined by ASTM D 1557

7.13 Backfilling adjacent to structures and not supporting any footing, grade
beams or mat foundations, shall be compacted and then tested for in-place density in
accordance with ASTM D1556. The tested density shall be at least 90 percent of the
maximum dry density as determined by ASTM D1557.

7.14 The moisture content of the material being compacted shall be within
percent of the optimum moisture content as determined by ASTM D1557.

7.15 Structural fill or backfill adjacent to structures shall be placed in compacted

layers of 150mm or as specified in project specification. The lift thickness can be
increased after engineer’s approval and compacted to at least 95 percent of the
maximum dry density as determined in ASTM D1557.

7.16 Backfilling will be done using the approved fill material or select granular
material as per drawings. Each layer will be compacted to a dry density, depending
on the area of working when granular material is used, it will be compacted to a firm

and stable condition using an appropriate compacting device. Backfill material shall
conform to relevant project specifications.

7.17 Backfilling will proceed symmetrically about the structure, whenever possible
to do so.

7.18 The concrete sides will not be backfilled until the specified coatings are
applied and fully cured on the concrete surface.

7.19 The water for the compaction will be added uniformly. If required, the fill
material will be ploughed to uniform water content before compacting. If drying is
required, the same will be done by way of natural drying. In cases additional dry
material is added for drying, care will be taken to see that the layer thickness does
not exceed that specified.

8.0 Testing and inspection

8.1 RFI will be initiated for inspections of Excavation, Fill Placement,
Compaction and Testing as per approved ITP, Quality Control Plan and
Project Specification listed under Technical Specification or as stated on
the latest IFC drawings
