 Acceleration due to gravity (g): When a body falls freely under gravity, the
acceleration produced in the body due to earth’s gravitational attraction is
called acceleration due to gravity.
 When a body falls down, its velocity increases with time, so the acceleration +g.
If the body moves vertically upwards, its velocity decreases with time, so the
acceleration is –g( retardation).
 The value of acceleration due to gravity: In SI 9.8 −2 10 −2 & in CGS 980 . −2

 The value of acceleration due to gravity does not depend on the mass of the body.
 Two bodies of different masses are simultaneously dropped from a height,
both will reach the ground simultaneously (at the same time) in
vacuum.(Because there is no friction and buoyancy due to air and acceleration
due to gravity does not depend on mass of the body.
 Slope of Displacement-Time graph = value of Velocity.
 Slope of Velocity-Time graph = Value of acceleration.
 Area of Velocity-Time graph = Value of Displacement.
