Workshop 1

I. Concentrations of Solutions. A sulfuric acid solution containing 571.6 g of H2SO4 per liter of solution has a
density of 1.329 g/cm3. Calculate
a) the mass percentage

571.6 g H 2 SO 4 1L so ln
× = 0.430098 g H 2 SO 4 / g so ln
1L so ln 1329 g so ln
mass percent is thus 0.4301x100 = 43.01 % H2SO4.

b) the molality

First, calculate the mass of solvent: mass of solvent = mass of solution – mass of H2SO4 = (density x volume)
of solution – mass of H2SO4 = (1.329 kg/L x 1L) solution – 0.5716 kg of H2SO4 = 0.7574 kg of solvent

5.827mol H 2 SO 4
molality = = 7.693 = 7.69m H 2 SO 4
0.7574kg solvent

c) the molarity

5.827mol H 2 SO 4
molarity = = 5.827M H 2 SO 4
1L so ln

II. Solubility and Henry’s Law. Fish generally need an O2 concentration in water of at least 4mg/L for survival.
What partial pressure of oxygen above the water (in atmospheres at 0 oC) is needed to obtain this concentration?
The solubility of O2 in water at 0 oC and 1 atm partial pressure is 2.21x10-3 mol/L.

M = K ⋅P
M 2.21×10 −3 mol / L mol
Calculate k : k = = = 2.21×10 −3
P L ⋅ atm
1.00 atm

Convert 4mg / L to mol / L :

4mg = 4 ×10 −3 g
 1mol 
 4 ×10 −3 g × 
 32 .00 g 
O 2 molarity = = 1.25 ×10 − 4 M
1.00L
mol
1.25 ×10 −4
M L = 0.06atm
PO 2 = =
k mol

III. Colligative Properties. Adrenaline is the hormone that triggers release of extra glucose molecules in times
of stress or emergency. A solution of 0.64g of adrenaline in 36.0 g of CCl4 causes an elevation of 0.49 oC in the
boiling point. What is the molar mass of adrenaline?

∆T b + 0.49
∆T b = K b m ; m = = = 0.0976 = 0.098m adrenaline
Kb 5.02

mol adrenaline g adrenaline

m= =
kg CCl 4 MW adrenaline × kg CCl 4

g adrenaline 0.64 g adrenaline

MW adrenaline = = = 1.8 ×10 2 g / mol adrenaline
m × kg CCl 4 0.0976m × 0.0360kg CCl 4
