--> painting, enamel, glass, dye developed from Egypt and Babylon.
• Red: cinnabar; Blue: ground cobalt glass and cobalt aluminum oxide

Others
Uses
• paints,
• varnishes,
• plastics,
• artists’ colors,
• printing inks for paper and textiles,
• leather decoration,
• building materials (cement, renderings, concrete bricks and tiles, mostly based on
iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments),
• imitation leather,
• floor coverings,
• rubber,
• paper,
• cosmetics,
• ceramic glazes,
• enamels.
When choosing a pigment for a particular application, several points have to be considered.
The following properties are also important:
• New physical effects led to the so-called “quantum effect pigments”, but these are
in the very early stage of nanoscale laboratory curiosities;
There are still challenges: Brilliant, inorganic, nontoxic, stable and cheap green or
blue pigments are amongst these. Probably, the mixed crystal systems are promising
fields for new discoveries.
General physical & chemical properties
Chemical compositions
Inorganic pigments are oxides, sulfides, oxide hydroxides, silicates, sulfates, or
carbonates ;
Can be single or mixed components (e.g. red iron oxide, α-Fe2O3; chrome green
pigments are mixtures of chrome yellow and iron blue)
• Particles: size, shape, size contribution,… • Crystal and spectra
When a photon enters a pigmented film, one of three events may occur:
1. It may be absorbed by a pigment particle;
2. It may be scattered by a pigment particle;
3. It may simply pass through the film (the binder being assumed to be nonabsorbent)
The important physical-optical properties: light absorption and light-scattering
properties
Absorption < scattering white
Absorption >> scattering in VIS black
Absorption is selective depending on wavelengths color
Color properties
1. Colorimetry: relates the perceived color quality to the color stimulus, which in turn is based
on the reflectance spectrum.
2. The Kubelka–Munk theory: relates to scattering, absorption, and film thickness (scattering
coefficient S, absorption coefficient K, film thickness h).
3. The theory of multiple scattering (scattering interaction): relates the scattering coefficient S
to the pigment volume concentration and to the scattering diameter QS of the individual
particle. The absorption coefficient K is directly proportional to the absorption diameter QA
and the concentration.
4. Mie’s theory: the scattering diameter QS and the absorption diameter QA are related to the
particle size D, the wavelength, and the optical constants of the material.

Định luật Lamber-Beer và lý thuyết Mie
• Định luật Lamber-Beer: ln(I/Io) = - C.x (đúng với C nhỏ)
- Io: cường độ nguồn bức xạ đi vào vật chất
- I: cường độ nguồn bức xạ ra khỏi vật chất
- C: nồng độ
- x: bề dày lớp vật chất nguồn bức xạ đi qua
Hệ số hấp thu = (Io – I)/Io
Fe2(SO4)3 + NaOH = Fe(OH)3 + Na2SO4
Fe(OH)3 Fe2O3 + H2O
Ưu điểm:
- Hiệu suất thu hồi TiO2 cao
- Chỉ dùng 1 hóa chất là H2SO4
Hạn chế:
- Tốn kém do lượng H2SO4 nhiều
PHƯƠNG PHÁP ACID SULFURIC
1. Phân hủy:
FeTiO3 + 3H2SO4 = …
FeTiO3 + 2H2SO4 = …
Phản ứng tỏa nhiệt ban đầu chỉ cần cung cấp 125 – 135 oC, sau đó tự nâng lên 180 – 200 oC
Phản ứng kết thúc sau 5-10 phút
2. Tách Fe: dùng phôi Fe hoàn nguyên Fe3+ Fe2+
PTPU: …
Nhận biết: dd bắt đầu có màu tím do Ti4+ Ti3+ khi hoàn nguyên
2TiO(SO4) + Fe + 2H2SO4 = …
3. Thủy phân tạo acid metatitanic: TiOSO4 + H2O …
4. Nung acid metatitatic ở 200-300 oC (với nước) hoặc 500-950 oC (SO3) để loại H2O và SO3
Nung TiO2 <950 oC: anatase; > 950 oC: rutile

PP2: sp trung gian CdCO3 + Na2S CdS
PP3: CdO hoặc CdCO3 + S (600 oC) CdS
