Pair Explanation
What is it?
An analogy is a comparison between two things, and the comparison is used to determine the
relationship between different sets of things. The thing which is being compared is likely to have some similarities or
things in common with whatever its comparison is. These comparisons are often used as figurative language in order to
more
easily explain an idea or principle.
Function of Analogy in Literature: Writers use analogies to link an unfamiliar or a new idea with common and
familiar objects. It is easier for readers to comprehend a new idea, which may have been difficult for them to understand
otherwise. Their comprehension of a new idea picks up the pace when they observe its similarity to something that is
familiar to them. In addition, by employing this literary tool, writers catch the attention of their readers. Analogies help
increase readers’ interest as analogies help them relate what they read to their life.

For example:
kitten : cat :: puppy : dog

The colons stand for words, so that when you read it aloud, the analogy says: Kitten is to cat as puppy is to dog.
In this case, the relationship described is between the young and adult animals. The two animals being
compared are cats and dogs.

Take a look at the analogies below to see if you can figure out how the words are related to each other. This will
help you understand the comparison that is being made.
