THE IMPORTANCE OF CLASSIFYING PLANTS

There are more than 500 000 kinds of plants on the Earth.
Plants come in different shapes and sizes. As there are so
many different kinds of plants, it is important to classify them
based on their characteristics. This makes it easier for us to
identify and study plants.

Type of stem:
One way to classify plants is according to their type of stem. Stems can be
woody or non-woody.
A woody stem is thick and covered with bark. Most woody stems can support
plants. However, some woody stems, such as those of vines, are unable to
support plants.
Non-woody stems are not covered with bark. They are usually green and soft.

Trees, shrubs and woody vines are examples of plants with woody stems.

Grasses, herbs and non-woody vines are examples of plants with non-woody.
stems.
