Fun-tastic Fractions!

First Grade Math

Yummy fractions! This lesson will introduce fractions to your students and help them identify and make fractions
of their own.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to identify fractions that are divided into halves.

Materials and preparation Key terms

Paper plates half

Crayons fractions
Construction paper (cut into shapes such as
hearts, butterflies, umbrellas, kites, squares,
circles, and triangles, 1 per student)
Plastic knives
Soft cookies

Introduction (10 minutes)

Display the various construction paper shapes on the board.

Ask the students to make predictions about how they will be used.
Read I Want Half to the students, and discuss what half means in the story. Remind your students that a
half is one of two equal parts of something.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (10 minutes)

Draw a big circle on the board. Then, draw a line down the middle of the circle, and divide it into 2 equal
parts.
Point out to the students that the circle was one whole piece and has now been divided into two equal
parts.
Inform the students that when they take a whole shape and divide it into equal parts, the parts are
fractions, or parts of the whole.
Take a paper plate, and ask the students how they can divide the circle into halves.
While they are guessing, hold the plate in front of you and fold the shape in half, making sure the edges
are even.

 Then, open it up, and show it to the students.
Ask one of the students to come up and point to both halves.
Tell the students the plate has now been divided into halves.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Pass out the paper plates to the students.

Tell them that they are going to turn the whole plate into fractions.
Call on several students to tell you the steps to make halves.
After they have correctly given the steps, have them fold their plates to make 2 halves.
Remind them to make sure that the edges are even.
Then, ask them to unfold and show you their two halves.
Invite them to count and tell you how many halves they see.
Go back to the board with the big circle on it, and write one half in each section.
Then, instruct the students to do the same.

Independent working time (10 minutes)

Invite the students to come up and select a shape from the board.
Tell them that they are going to divide their whole shapes into 2 equal parts or halves.
Remind them as they divide their shapes to make sure that the edges are together and even.
When they are finished making creases down the middle, have them open their shapes up. Point out that
they should see two equal parts.
Instruct them to write the words one half on each section.

Differentiation

Enrichment: Give your students another paper plate to fold into fourths. Have your students complete
the Half Breakfast worksheet and the Shape Fractions: Halves worksheet.
Support: Give your students the blank pie chart. Have them cut this shape and fold on the line to show
equal parts. Instruct them to copy the words one half from the board onto their papers.

Assessment (5 minutes)

Give all the students a soft cookie and a plastic knife.

Have them cut their cookies into halves.
Walk around the room and assist your students, reminding them to find the center and cut down the
middle.

Review and closing (5 minutes)

Draw your students' attention to the circle you drew on the board.
Review the vocabulary, and remind them of the whole circle and the two equal parts that were made
when you divided it in half.
