“Conforming with Global Education Standards”

Dr. Leo R. Banatao, Secondary School
Principal III of Amulung National High
School signed my PLLP last October 2,
2019.

He encourage me to continually engage on

REFLECTION

“Ask not what your Country can do for you-Ask what you can do for your Country”. A striking quote from the late John F. Kennedy in his Inaugural
address. A historic words that inspired not only the Americans but also other nations. A quote that Filipino Teachers should live with by thoughts and by
heart.
You might be curious of the connection of my introduction to this reflection. Let me explain if you allow me to tell it thru a story? Last week, Deped
Tambayan posted a message from our Secretary saying “as talk of salary increase spreads, teachers are reminded that teaching is not all about money”. A
message which I strongly agree. I was so engrossed reading the post I happen to read the comments posted by teachers, I could not help myself but to air
my comment saying that other agencies are laughing and looking down at us because of the kind of teachers we project in social media. Teachers express
hate towards the government and towards Secretary Briones. They rant, curse and spitting bitter words towards her which I believe serves as the face and
personhood of the Department of Education, the department that provides bread and butter for our family. I felt bad, so I posted that as Teachers we
should act and talk professionally because we serve as models not only’ to our students but also to Juans’ and Juanas’ of the country, I assume. As
expected, they turned their attention to me cursing me, spit bad words at me and as if they would want to stub me.

“Conforming with Global Education Standards”

With this experience I have copious realizations. First, there’s a lot of teachers who are ignorant on Cyberliteracy /Digital Literacy (Information
and ICT knowledge). They are clueless about digital citizenship and cyber literacy. They spit out words that bring not only shame on themselves but to the
department. Social media is a community, as teachers we are expected to act appropriately, talk professionally basically, as teachers we should post error
free grammar, and know even the simplest difference of words like shot and shut. REMEMBER, what we post, how we comment and how we speak depicts
our personality. The department of Education provides training and seminars for this Literacy. If we are not lucky enough to be called as one of the
recipients, it is our primordial responsibility to search references that would enhance and improve learning. While doing the PLLP I realized that if we want
it, there’s a lot of ways to achieve it.

Second, on the aspect of financial literacy, the truth is we are compensated well, compared to others and other agency we are lucky. Yet, we
complain too much because we never get contented. There was a time when we still do not know City Savings, we never met East West and never
befriended GSIS, and we have this list of needs and multiple WANTS. We want a brand new car so there Mr. City savings shook our hand and lent us
money payable for 3 years. We taught our house is not big enough (comparing ourselves to co-teachers) we run to Ms. East West, then we said we are
teachers we need laptop, high end cell phones for my spouse and my kids. Endless wanting for new TV, Refrigerator, It’s hot in the Philippines we need air
condition. I will enrol my kids in the private school and there endless it is not knowing we still have needs. We are exposed to LOAN Sharks and private
lending institutions pampered us, not knowing we are digging our own grave. When the time comes that we only have 5k left as our net income, and worst
we even gamble our ATM for another loan while others even have several undeducted loans in their payslip there we find ourselves complaining and
blaming the government. What a SHAME.Well, I am weak with this financial literacy but I know my place and I don’t blame the government, this is my
doing and I’m accountable to it.

Third, learning is a continuous process and we should be updated with the changes in the institution. We need to equip ourselves with the KSVAs of
the seven 21st Century Literacies. How could we mould our learners if we teachers are not armed and ready? There are 7 literacies we must improve
ourselves with and these are: The Arts and Creativity, Ecoliteracy, Cyberliteracy/Digital Literacy (Information and ICT Knowledge, Financial Literacy,
Media Literacy, Social/Emotional Literacies, Globalization and Multicultural Literacy. There are literacies that I am weak at and others is under
developing. If only teachers will focus on their professional development and committed in helping their co-teachers and students they will not think of
humiliating themselves in social media.
We are only Humans, but we are teachers. Thoughts and actions should be guarded, and most of all KSVAs of the seven 21 st Century Literacies must
updated.
