1. Explain three roles of the school head in building a safer school in relation to disasters.
a. Teaching Disaster management to students
b. Serve as an evacuation center
c. If a disaster happens during school hours, schools must consider the risks that
students are exposed to and respond early to such an event.
2. Explain the basic concepts related to disaster risk reduction and management, with
relevant examples.
a. Hazard – an unavoidable danger or risk, even though often foreseeable.
Example
A common way to classify hazards is by category:

 biological - bacteria, viruses, insects, plants, birds, animals, and humans, etc.,
 chemical - depends on the physical, chemical and toxic properties of the
chemical,
 ergonomic - repetitive movements, improper set up of workstation, etc.,
 physical - radiation, magnetic fields, pressure extremes (high pressure or
vacuum), noise, etc.,
 psychosocial - stress, violence, etc.,
 safety - slipping/tripping hazards, inappropriate machine guarding, equipment
malfunctions or breakdowns.

b. Vulnerability - the likelihood that assets will be damaged/destroyed/affected when

exposed to a hazard. Example a building with multiple floors may be more
vulnerable to shaking from an earthquake and more likely to collapse than a one-
story building.
c. Disaster Risk Management is the application of disaster risk reduction policies
and strategies, to prevent new disaster risks, reduce existing disaster risks, and
manage residual risks, contributing to the strengthening of resilience and
reduction of losses. Examples are reducing exposure to hazards, lessening
vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land and the
environment, and improving preparedness for adverse events
3. Identify and explain some of the components contained in the DRRM cycle as it applies
to the school setting.

a. Prevention Mitigation - efforts are made to prevent or mitigate damage

b. Preparedness – Activities and measures for ensuring an effective response to the
impact of hazards
c. Disaster – doing what was prepared during disaster
d. Response – rescue efforts, first aid, fire fighting and evacuation
e. Rehabilitation Reconstruction - considerations of disaster risk reduction should form
the foundations for all activities
4. Briefly discuss two functions of a school disaster risk reduction and management
(DRRM) committee.
a. Spearhead the conduct of multi-hazard drills and other disaster
prevention, mitigation and preparedness activities in school
b. Serve as the point person for collaborations and coordination with
local DRRM Council and other partner organizations
5. Briefly explain three tools that you can use to assess the vulnerability of your school to
disasters.
a. Student-led hazard mapping
b. Baseline data
c. Emergency Response Inventory
6. Explain three important considerations when developing your school DRRM plan.
a. Geological location
b. Socio-economic landscape
c. School Physical Condition
7. Explain three strategies for communicating your school DRRM plan
a. Student awareness and preparedness education
b. Involve parents and other stakeholders
c. Curriculum integration
8. How do you propose to integrate disaster DRRM-related concepts in your school
curriculum?
a. AP DRRM
b. Science Typhoons, Volcanoes and Earthquakes
c. MAPEH First Aide
9. Enumerate and explain some examples of learning materials related to DRRM that you
have observed your teachers using in their classrooms
a. An AP teacher taught Disaster Risk Reduction and Management to her Grade 10
students during the 1st Quarter in which the learning Materials were given by the
LGU.
b. A Science teacher taught Typhoons, Volcanoes and Earthquakes to her grade 10
students during the 1st quarter using materials developed by the RO.
c. A MAPEH Teacher taught First Aide to his Grade 9 students using materials
developed by the teacher during the Division INSET.
10. Suggest some DRRM-related activities that you can plan and organize for your students
to encourage them to become DRRM champions.
a. Organization of School-Based Student-Led DRRM Organization
b. Participation to Red Cross First Aide Interschool Competition
c. Organization of School-Based Training Seminars for students
d. Parents and other stakeholders’ involvement in organizing the said activities
