There are many different kinds of hammers. The head, weight and shape
differ from one kind of hammer to another. The length of the handle may
be different, too. The carpenter uses a hammer with a narrow, straight
edge to hit small nails. He also uses a hammer with a curved, forked
shape to take nails out of pieces of wood.
Some hammers have soft copper heads. We use a hammer with a soft
head when we do not want to damage the material. Another kind of
hammer is called a mallet.
It is a hammer with a wooden head. We use it when we want to spread
the blow over a large area. A drop hammer is a very heavy weight. It is
for hitting very large objects.
