NEBOSH Assessment 1

Julie is a receptionist at a bank. Much of her work involves using a telephone to take
messages and redirect calls to other departments. Julie regularly uses a computer to make
appointments, record messages and respond to emails. After working at reception for eight
months, Julie found she was leaving work with an aching shoulder and neck, and with sore
eyes and a headache. Julie talked about the problems with her manager, who decided to
review how computers were used in reception.

Task 1:
If the worker continues to carry out the work, explain the financial implications that this would
have for the employer. (15 marks)

Task 1:

 First financial cost the company will incur on Julie be sick leave pay and medical cost pay, should
Julie fall sick from continuing this work scenario,

 Second financial cost that will incur on the form of staff or line manager deputed to identify the
reasons and solutions against this incident, in the form of inactive production time,

 Third financial cost incur will be the associated corrective modification charges on the workplace
infrastructure, namely table, chair, computer, protective screen for computer, etc,

 Since Julie is liaising with different departments to communicate information, any down time
resulting from Julie’s ill health will adversely affect the whole production time of the company, thus
will incur huge uncountable indirect financial cost to the company,

 Since Julie is responding to emails, any down time from Julie will affect the efficiency and
reputation of the company on its clienteles, stakeholders, shareholders, and other related parties,
which again will result in uncountable loses, lose of reputation, lose of potential business loss, etc.,
this falls under indirect financial cost,

 Since Julie is making appointments for company business, again any such down time will incur loss
of potential business, loss of company reputation, etc., this also an indirect financial cost,

 Possible another financial cost will be on hiring and training new staff, should the need arise,

 Should the company decide to anther employee to replace Julie due to ill-health, again financial
cost in the form of overtime pay, ex-gratia payment, bonus pay, etc.,

 Financial cost can aggregate should legal claim put up against the company should the employee
incur permanent or partial loses physically or mentally, or her wellness has adversely affected from
this occupational ill health,

 Fines and sanctions from enforcement agencies can attribute to direct financial cost,

 Indirect financial cost can count on the loss of morale of the employee Julie, which can eventually
spread the incident to other staff and workers on the peer group,
