Position Purpose:
The incumbent of this post is primarily responsible for mechanical maintenance, repairs, installation and refurbishment of the
pipeline and equipment in classified hazardous locations and potentially explosive atmospheres to international standards for
efficient and effective custody, transfer and transport of petroleum products in liaison with operation, electrical and
instrumentation departments in Transnet Pipelines. The incumbent is also responsible for certain electrical functions,
depending on the requirements at a specific workshop.

Position outputs:
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
To perform preventative maintenance tasks on mechanical equipment by detecting, repairing and reporting defects, thereby
ensuring reliable equipment for the continuous operations of the pipeline network e.g. on valves, pumps, high pressure, liquid
and gas pipeline.

DEFECT REPAIR (ELECTRICAL IMPACT)


Identify, analyse and repair defects on installed (live) equipment. Repair specific installed (live) equipment by performing
diagnostic tests to identify defects and effect repairs e.g. on valves, pumps, high-pressure pipeline.

REMOVE AND REPLACE INSTALLED (LIVE) EQUIPMENT (ELECTRICAL IMPACT)


Remove and replace specific equipment by planning the complete installation, isolation, depressurisation, and the removal of
the equipment as well as preparing and installing the replacement, repressuring and testing the operation of the equipment
e.g. pumps, motors, valves.

REFURBISHMENT OF MAJOR EQUIPMENT


Refurbish equipment by disassembling the equipment, replacing defective parts, reassembling and testing the equipment to
the manufacturers, specification e.g. mainline pumps, valves

REPAIR OF BURST PIPELINE


Repair of high pressure pipeline by finding the exact location of the burst, stopping the liquid/gas flow, containing and
retrieving the spilled product, preparing the specific area to effect the repair to the pipeline as well as repressuring the line.
Performing an external inspection and placing the pipeline back into operation.

WASHAWAYS
Management of washaways repairs by identifying the cause of the washaway, determining preventative measures and
planning and executing the complete repair operation.

HOT TAPPING
Performing a hot-tapping and stoppling process by planning and executing hot-tapping, TOR and stoppling processes, and
liquid and gas pipelines.

HELICOPTER INSPECTION
• Observing servitude strip
• Identify defects
• Recording and reporting

INTELLIGENT PIGGING
Monitoring an intelligent pigging process during a pipeline survey by preparing the monitoring points for access, safe loading,
retrieving and cleaning the Intelligent Pig, installing monitoring devices, observing the actual time of arrival of the Intelligent
Pig and reporting the relevant information to all role players timeously.

SAFETY
• Attend meetings
• Do safety inspections
• Use of safety equipment

ADMIN
The effective control of administration duties which includes:
• Reports (defect and inspection)

Qualifications & Experience:


- Trade test Millwright (3 years) with 3 years experience. Must have adequate knowledge of all mechanical equipment and
electrical installations/equipment at Transnet Pipelines Workshops to be able to function on his own. The following courses
must be passed with practical on the job experience during the three years experience in Transnet Pipelines
- Theory: Operations Course there after person has to get practical experience (training) on depot where based until passed
out on depot (manifold)
- Computer literate (OMS – Operations Management System)
- S.A.P. course in Plant maintenance. Purchasing and Inventory, Word, Excel, etc.
- Pump course (10 days)
- Valve course (10 days)
- E Yellow (switching HT)
- GHSTC (SAFETY) course (1 week)
- Fire Fighting
- Oil spill course ( 5 days)
- Code 08 drivers license
- First Aid Course Level Two
- Mobile crane and truck mounted crane course
- Confined space entry
- Gas/fuel stoppling
- Crossings (witness only)
- Hot Work Permit
- Excavation Permit
- Bonding Permit
