I. Learning Objectives
At the end of a 60–minute lesson, at least 75% of the students should be able to achieve
the following with at least 75% level of proficiency:
A. Define quartiles,
B. Illustrate quartiles using tables, and;
C. Identify the median, lower halves and upper halves of quartiles.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic : Grade 10: Measures of Position
B. Reference : Grade 10: Mathematics Learner’s Module

C. Materials : Power point presentation, chalkboard, cut-outs

D. Values Integration : Perseverance, Optimism and Cooperation
III. Procedures
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
2. Prayer
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance
B. Review
The teacher will ask the following questions to her students to see if they can still recall
some ideas related to the next topic.
 How do we define quartiles?
 Quartiles are divided into how many equal parts?
 How do we identify the media of quartiles?
C. Motivation
The class will be divided into four groups. The teacher will present different pictures
and the students will identify which belongs to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quartiles. The fastest group
that can identify correctly what each quartile consists of will be declared the winner and will
receive a stamp.
D. Presentation of the Lesson
After conducting the activity, the teacher will ask the students what they have noticed
and let them guess what is the next topic to be discussed.

E. Development of the Lesson

Quartiles – are values that divide a list of ordered numbers into four equal parts. There are
three quartiles which are denoted as Q1,Q2 , ∧Q3. The second quartile (𝑄2) is equal to the
median.

Example 1.
The owner of My TEA shop recorded the number of customers who came into his shop each hour in a
day. The results were 16, 6, 12, 10, 8, 7, 15, 17, 9, 15, and 10. Find the lower quartile (𝑄1) and upper
quartile(𝑄3) of the data.
Solution:
 Arrange the data in ascending order 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10, 12, 15, 15, 16, 17.
 The least value in the data is 6 and the greatest value in the data is 17.
 The middle value in the data is 10
 The lower quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the least value in the data
set.
 So, the lower quartile is 8.
 The upper quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the greatest value in the
data set.
 So, the upper quartile is 15.
Since the second quartile is equal to the median, the steps in the computation of median by identifying
the median class is the same as the steps in identifying the 𝑄1 class and the 𝑄3 class.
Example 2.
Averina, a shoe store owner, wanted to compare the different brands of shoes. The table below
shows her record of the number of pairs of shoes bought from each of the brands in one week.
Find 𝑄1, 𝑄2, 𝑄3.

 Arrange the numbers of pairs of shoes in ascending order.

 Identify the median of the number of pairs of shoes. This is 𝑄2.

 Identify the lower half of the number of pairs of shoes.

 Identify the median of the lower half of the number of pairs of shoes. This is Q1

 Identify the upper half of the number of pairs of shoes.

 Identify the median of the upper half of the number of pairs of shoes. This is 𝑄3.

Exercise 1.
Eleven students recorded the number of laps of swimming they were able to do in a twenty-five-meter
pool. Below is the number of laps they did. 6, 8, 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, 6, 1, 9, 7 1.
 Arrange the values in ascending order.
 Identify the median. This is 𝑄2.
 Identify the lower half of the values.
 Identify the median of the lower half of the values. This is 𝑄1. 𝑄1
 Identify the upper half of the values. 6. Identify the median of the upper half of the values.
This is 𝑄3.

Generalization
1. How do we define quartiles?
2. How do we find the median?
3. Quartiles are divided into how many parts?

IV. Evaluation
Directions: On a one whole sheet of paper. Answer the following questions.
1. Alice wanted to compare the fruits with high water to substitute water to hydrate the body and
found the following data. Find 𝑄1, 𝑄2, 𝑄3. Also;
a. Identify the median of the amounts of water per cup.
b. Identify the lower half of the amounts of water per cup.
c. Identify the upper half of the amounts of water per cup.
d. Identify the median of the upper half of the amounts of water per cup

V. Assignment
Directions: On one whole sheet of paper. Answer the following problems.
1. The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who came into his cafe each
hour in the day. The results were 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10 and 11. Find the lower
quartile and upper quartile of the data.
2. Identify the first and second quartiles for the following set of numbers. {11, 14, 9, 2, 27, 26, 5,
8, 19, 10, 12, 6}
