X. RATIONALE

Learning doesn’t only exist in the four corners of the classroom. It extends outside
where learners process things learned. A child’s holistic development is a combination of
social, mental, physical and spiritual. This means that classroom itself cannot provide
all the needs of a child learner to become holistic. This requires a learner to learn new
things outside the classroom through engagement and experiencing real life situation
activities.

XI. Terminal Objective:

To provide students an opportunity to strive excellence in mathematics through


experiencing real-life situation activities.
XII. Enabling Objectives:
1. To enhance analytical and mathematical skills among participants.
2. To develop problem solving skills.
3. To promote quality mathematics education

Individual Quiz Guidelines


1. The District-Wide Math Olympics for the Individual Quiz Competition is a written exam.

2. The test consists of 50 questions worth 1 point each regardless of level of difficulty.

3. The contestants will be given 1.5 hours to answer the test.

4. The contestants will be ranked according to the gained scores and the top three will be
declared winners as 1st Place, 2nd Place and 3rd Place.

5. In case of tie, contestants will be given 3 sets of oral questions. Contestant with the highest
score will be declared winner.

6. There will be 1 entry per school in all grade level. For SHS, one entry only.

Team Quiz Guidelines

1. Participants to this event is one (1) team per School for Elementary/JHS/SHS

2. Each team compose of 2 contestants of the same grade level.

3. Contestants are not allowed to bring cellphone, ipad, camera, calculator, laptop computer,
and other gadgets during the contest.

4. All questions shall cover competencies of the grade level.

5. The District-Wide Team Competition is ORAL.

6. Each team will be provided with a paper strip. Before reading the question, each team will
write their team identification on the upper right portion of the paper strip.

7. There will be 20 questions: 10 fifteen-second questions worth 2 points each, 5 thirty-second


questions worth 3 points each and 5 one-minute questions worth 5 points each for a total of 60
points.

a. The 15-second questions are to be solved mentally. There will be no writing anywhere neither
on paper, the table, etc. The team of two will work together as one to discuss their answer to the
question. They may start to write their answer after the second reading.

b. For the 30-second questions scratch paper will be provided for each team contestant.
Contestants may begin solving as soon as they wish.

c. For 1-minute questions, a copy of each question will be provided to each team. Scratch
papers will be provided.

d. No additional questions should be asked over the 20 official questions provided for this stage
of competition.

8. The quizmaster will read the question twice, after which he/she gives the GO signal. The timer
starts when the quizmaster gives the GO signal. The questions shall be read exactly as it is
formulated. Rephrasing of the questions is not allowed.

9. Each answer will be written on the official answer paper strip provided. As soon as the buzzer
rings, every team must stop writing. Proctors will collect their paper strip and give it to the
judges.

10. The judge will announce the teams with the correct answer. The scorers record the points
obtained by each team for each correct answer.
11. Clarification on a given question should be made before the next question is asked. This
should be directed to the Chairman of the Board of Judges.

12. Answers must be given complete with units and to the required accuracy. However, if the
unit is already given in the way the questions is being asked, it may not be given in the answer.

13. Only the official contestants may raise a clarification.

14. The teams will be ranked according to their total score in the three parts to determine the
winners.

15. The Board of Judges are responsible for settling all questions, including protest, which may
arise in the course of the competition.

MATH TRAIL MECHANICS AND GUIDELINES

1. Math Trail will be contested for JHS only.

2. The team will compose of four (4) members. (1 member from each grade level from Grade 7-10)

3. All members of the team must wear their IDs at all time for easy identification. Only ballpen or
sign pen is allowed to be used in solving all the contest problems.

4. Borrowing or lending of calculators between or among teams is strictly prohibited and is a


ground for automatic disqualification.

5. Coaches or teachers are not allowed to enter the contest area so as not to disrupt the
proceeding of the contest.

6. Bringing or using mobile phone, MP3, MP4, tablets, ipod, or any gadgets is not allowed during
the competition. Each team is required to bring a calculator and all forms of measuring devices.

7. The competition is composed of 5 checkpoints or stations. A station contains important


information needed to answer a particular problem given by the station commander. Every team
must get whatever data/information that each station may provided or suggest.

8. The competition is good for one and half hours (1.5 hours), inclusive of the data gathering and
answering of the contest problems.

9. Initially, all the teams will be assigned to go to a designated checkpoint/stop by the Base
Commander.

10. Each team must read the instruction carefully about what ought to be done in a checkpoint.
The team will gather all the available information/data necessary to answer the problem in the
station.

11. Each team will stay in a checkpoint for an alloted time (15 minutes). The designated Station
Commander will announce the starting and ending time for the team to be in a particular
station.

12. As soon as the buzzer rings, the teams will submit their paper immediately to the Station
Commander, and then proceed to the next station. (Note: Units of measure must always be
indicated in the final answer whether it is specified or not in the question. Final Answer must be
encircled.)

13. No member of the team is allowed to mark, erase, deface, tear, crease, add or alter any
figures, arrangements, and lines position of any materials placed in each station for the purpose
of measurement. Any member of the team who is caught violating this rule means automatic
disqualification of the whole team.

MATHEMATICAL INVESTIGATION

1. This competition will be participated only by the JHS and SHS only.

2. Each entry will be represented by one (1) team which will be composed of three (3) members.

3. This will be a 2-day activity, to wit:


Day 1: Orientation, preparations, and onset of first stages of investigation,
Day 2. Presentation (Oral and Poster Presentation)

4. Each competing team is required to have both the oral and poster presentation.
*For Oral Presentation:
- The presentation shall last for five (5) minutes which shall then be followed by 5-
minute interpellation.
- The presentation shall be aided with powerpoint presentation.
- The presentation shall include the following:
- Title
- Background/Rationale
- Situation
- Questions Investigated
- Methodology/Process (include experiences in doing/mentoring/coaching
the students in the investigation)
- Conjectures formulated (Supported by data)
- Justifications/Expectations of all the Conjectures considered
- The presentation shall be evaluated using the following rubric:
