A Detailed lesson plan in Automotive (Cooling system)

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Identify and discuss the purpose and operation of cooling system.

2. Appreciate the significance of engine cooling system.

3. Apply the basic parts of cooling system learned in engine.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: engine cooling system

Materials: visual aids, pictures, video.

References: automotive mechanic, crouse-anglin,pp.315.

III. PROCEDURE

TEACHERS ACTIVITIES STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

Good morning everyone! Good morning sir!

What was our lesson last meeting? Sir it's all about lubricating system.

Did you understand the past lesson? Yes sir.

2. MOTIVATION

Teacher's activities Students activities

Show a picture of engine

What pictures do you see on the board? Sir it is an engine.

Very good!
Teacher's activities Student's activities

How does an engine work?

Yes student A. Sir an engine works through using a

gasoline or diesel.

Yes correct!

Why an engine doesn't get overheated?

Yes student B. Sir, based on what see on the boat

and automobile, some of
them uses water and even a purified
water to maintain the
temperature of engine.

Correct!

B. PRESENTATION

Teacher's activities Student's activities.

Today, we are going to discussed about

an "engine cooling system".

But before we are going to discussed,

we will have an activity first. Posted on the

board is a" word search puzzle". What you

are going to do is to find words list on

right. The words may appear horizontally,

vertically, diagonally (backward/upward)

When you find the words, circle it on the

puzzle, then cross it off on the list.

I will call five students to do the job or activity.

Upon completion of the word search puzzle, participants be call to say something or explain the
words they have encircled, based on what they understand.

4. ANALYSIS

TEACHER'S ACTIVITIES STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

What do you think the purpose of cooling system?

Yes student A? Sir it keeps an engine in an Efficient

` temperature. .

Yes, the cooling system keeps the engine

At its most efficient temperature at all speeds

And operating conditions.

What will happen if this heat in an engine will

Not taken away?

Yes student B. Sir if this heat will not taken Away in engine,
it will cause The damages parts in engine.

Yes correct!

This is one of the three jobs performed by

The cooling system. Cooling system also

Helps bring the engine up to normal operating

Temperature as quickly as possible.

TEACHER'S ACTIVITIES STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

Now how the cooling system works?

Yes student C? The cooling system works by sending The

liquid coolant to the engine blocks
and heads of engine.

Very good!

As student C said the cooling system send a

Liquid coolant through the passages of the

engine Blocks and heads. As the coolant flows

through this Passages it picks up heat from the

engine. This heated Fluid makes its way through

the radiator, as it flows Through the thin tubes

in the radiator this hot liquid Is cooled by the air

stream, Once this fluid is cooled It returns to the

engine to absorb more heat.

There are five basic parts of cooling system to

do The job in controlling engine temperature.

What are those?

Yes student A? Sir the five basic parts of cooling system are
water pump, water jackets Thermostat,
radiator and fun.

As you can see the picture (present the picture)

The cylinder block and cylinder head have internal

Passages or water jackets, the coolant or antifreeze

Flows through here and picks up some heat, and cool

Cool the metal parts and it heats the coolant.

And this is the job done by the water puma,

Water pump pushes the hot coolant out of

the water jackets And through the radiator.

How the radiator works?

Yes student B? Sir in the radiator the coolant

Loses heat to the passing air.

Yes the radiator is also called heat exchanger, it

Has two sets of passages. One set is for the coolant

And the other is for outside air. Once the coolant

Flows here in the radiator the coolant loses heat

To the passing air and flows back again through the

water Jackets and pick up heat again.

What is the purpose of thermostat?

Yes student C? Sir the purpose of thermostat it

Allows the coolant to flow.

Yes very good. The purpose of thermostat

is to controls the coolant flow. When an engine

is cooled The thermostat closes to prevent the

circulation to radiator. As the engine warms up

the thermostat opens to allow coolant Flow

through the radiator.

What will happen if the thermostat failure?

Yes student A? Sir the engine will get Overheated because

the coolant Flows through here
cannot circulate Will to the radiator.
Yes very good!

This is one also performed by the fan.

Fan pulls or pushes outside air through

The radiator. This improves engine cooling

especially At idle low speed .

3. Abstraction

TEACHERS ACTIVITIES STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

Any question or clarification? No sir.

Now we'll have an activity.

Let's find out if you really Understand the lesson.

I have here a "concept map worksheet" with a topic

As the key word. What are you going to do is to think

And write the words on the map that relate to the

focal Word.

I will call five student to write on every cluster the

things that They have learned from the topic.

Any question? None teacher.

Water
jackets

Five basic
Water fan
parts of pump
cooling
system
thermostat radiator

4. APPLICATION

TEACHERS ACTIVITIES STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

This time well have an activity I have here

Pictures about the five basic parts of cooling system.

What are you going to do is to put the names that

Fit on the pictures and explain its operation.

Five students will be called.

IV. EVALUATION

1. What is cooling system?

2. What are the five basic parts of cooling system

And explain each part?

V. ASSIGNMENT

For your assignment have a research more about engine cooling System.

Use any automotive books or modules for your references.
