“Psychology and Personal Development”


Psychology, being the study of human thinking and behavior, serves as a foundation for personal development.

Two (2) proponents of Humanistic Psychology:


1. Abraham Maslow – He theorized the “Five Stages of Development” / Hierarchy of Needs -
Physiological Needs
- Safety Needs
- Love and Belongingness
Needs
- Esteem Needs
- Self-Actualization

2. Carl Rogers – He developed a personality theory that emphasized the importance of the self-actualizing
tendency in shaping human personalities. Self-concept/Personality Theory
Three components of Self-Concept
∙ Self-worth – Comprises what we think about ourselves.

∙ Self-image – How we see ourselves, includes the influence of our body image on inner personality. ∙ Ideal
Self – This is the person who we would like to be.

Analyze and elaborate student ideas in the given questions:

c. Abstract
(a) Human beings are motivated by a hierarchy of needs.
(b) The order of needs is not rigid but instead may be flexible based on external circumstances or
individual differences.
(c) However, Maslow clarifies that satisfaction of a needs is not an “all-or-none” phenomenon, it is not a must
to be satisfied 100% before you proceed to next level of needs. Moreover, growth needs continue to

(d) According to Carl Roger, The closer our self-image and ideal-self are to each other, the more
consistent or congruent we are and the higher our sense of self-worth.
