OBJECTIVE: Rounds numbers to the nearest thousands.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

Rounding means making a number simpler but keeping its value close to
what it was. The result is less accurate, but easier to use .

TRY TO DISCOVER

According to DOH, there were 5 223 total number of COVID-19 cases in the
Philippines as ofApril 14, 2020.
About how many thousandsCOVID-19 cases were there?

Study the number line below.

To which number is 5 223 closer, 5 000 or 6 000?

Since 5 223 is closer to 5 000, you can say that 5 223 becomes 5 000 when
rounded to the nearest thousands. Hence, the total number of COVID-19 cases as
of April 14, 2020 is about 5 000.

Study these given examples.

Number Rounded to the Nearest Thousands

7 238 7 000
9 409 9 000
4 671 5 000
74 524 75 000
98 933 99 000

✓ To round to the nearest thousand, identify the rounding place first. If the digit to
the right of the rounding place is 5 or greater, we round the thousand placeup by
adding 1 to the digit of the rounding place and changing the next 3 digits into 0

✓ If the digit to the right of the rounding place is less than 5, then we round down,
keeping the thousands digit the same and changing the next 3 digits into 0.

REMEMBER that there is a general rule for rounding:
If the number you are rounding is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, you must
round the number up. If the number you are rounding is followed by
0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, you must round the number down.

On May 31, 2020, the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon ended. Most

localities downgraded to either general community quarantine or modified general
community quarantine including Metro Manila which has been categorizedas the
epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.
According to the reports given by the Department of Health, there were 8 772
cases in the Philippines as of May 1, 2020 and 1 084 recovered patients. After two
weeks, new infections have climbed up to a total of 12 091 confirmed cases and 2
460 recoveries. By the end of the month, bulk of new cases has been reported
resulting to a total of 17 224 cases in the country.
Some Filipinos were not in favor on the decision of the government regarding the
shifting of quarantine in the localities but for others, it could be beneficial for they
could go back to work, earn money and support the basic needs of their family.

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 4
First Quarter/ Week 2/ Day 2

OBJECTIVE: Round numbers to the nearest ten thousand.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

Rounding numbers means adjusting the digits (up or down) to make

rough calculations easier. The result will be an estimated answer rather
than a precise one.

TRY TO DISCOVER

In this lesson, you will learn how to round whole numbers to the nearest ten
thousand.

Sometimes, we do not need to work with very accurate numbers. For example,
suppose that the attendance at a football match was 12 672. Most people may just
want to know there were about 10000 people at the football match instead of the
exact number. How do we come up with 10 000?

Study this number line below.

To which number is 12 672 closer, 10 000 or 20 000?

Since 12 672 is closer to 10 000, you can say that 12672 becomes 10 000 when
rounded to the nearest ten thousand. Hence, the attendance at the football match
was about 10 000.

Younumbers
Rounding can use means
these steps to round
replacing numbers.
a number with a simpler number.
1. Identify the place that you will be rounding.
2. Look at the number to the right of the rounding place.
3. Remember the rounding rules.
• 4 or less, let it rest (round down)
• 5 or more, add 1 more (round up)
4. Anything to the left remains the same.
5. Anything to the right becomes zero.

OBJECTIVE: Order numbers from 10 001 up to 50 000 in increasing or

decreasing order.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

To order numbers means to put them in order from least to greatest or

from greatest to least. Ascending order means from least to greatest,
and descending order means from greatest to least. To
place numbers in order, we need to compare them to one another.

TRY TO DISCOVER

Ordering numbers mean arrangement of

numbers either from small to big or from
big to small.

Look at this family. Their heights are 184

cm, 172 cm, 133 cm, 124 cm, 151cm and
180cm respectively. Can you tell which
one is the smallest and which is the
tallest?

In order to decide who the tallest is, we will have to arrange their heights in a particular
order. So, Daddy, Grandpa, Mommy, Grandma, Sister and Brother, with this we get that
Brother is the shortest and Daddy is the tallest among them.

Let us analyze the following examples.

Ascending order:

13 240 23 289 41 009 42 673 49 091

Descending order:

11 098 25 403 30 357 31 020 49 000

• For ascending order, check the smallest number from the given
list and place it first and then put the numbers according to the
increasing order.
• For descending order, check the biggest number from the given
list and place it first and then put the numbers according to the
decreasing order.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION-NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION

SCHOOLS DIVISION OF PASAY CITY

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 4
First Quarter / Week 2 / Day 5

OBJECTIVE: Orders numbers up to 100 000 in increasing or decreasing

order.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Pairs of numbers can be compared by looking at the digits with the
same place value.
• In comparing, always start at the left, then consider the digits in each
place value. Then we can arrange them from least to greatest or vice
versa.
Before we start with today’s lesson, let’s have a quick review of our past
lesson.
Compare each number pair. Write the correct symbol (<, =, or >) on
each blank to make a true statement.
1. 35 277 ______ 35 456
2. 87 564 ______ 100 000
3. 84 217 ______ 84 389
4. 39 216 ______ 37 114
5. 58 289 ______ 58 283

TRY TO DISCOVER!
The chart below shows the population of some barangays in Pasay
City in 2015. Let us arrange the barangays according to their population
from increasing order or decreasing order.
BARANGAY POPULATION
1 1 233
23 1 806
64 1 603
88 1 356
115 1 072

Solution 1: Using a number line

1072 1233 1356 1603 1 806

1000 1100 1200 1300 1400 1500 1600 1700 1800 1900 2000

1,072 1,233 1,356 1,603 1,806- increasing order

MODULE CODE: PASAY-M4-Q1-W2-D5

Teacher: _______________________________________ Section: _______________

Solution 2: By comparing the digit of the numbers.

BARANGAY THOUSANDS HUNDREDS TENS ONES
1 1 2 3 3
23 1 8 0 6
64 1 6 0 3
88 1 3 5 6
115 1 0 7 2
same 0 is the
smallest 8 is
the biggest
therefore:
8>6>3>2>0
The digits in the thousands place are the same. The digits in the
hundreds place differ. Ordering the digits in the hundreds place results
to:8>6>3>2>0. Thus, from greatest to least, the numbers are:
1 806 1 603 1 356 1 233 1 072 – decreasing order
Take note: When we say increasing it is from the smallest to the biggest
while decreasing is from the biggest down to the smallest.
