Wound Healing Effect of Malunggay Moringa Oleifera Leaf Extract on the Wounds of Mice Mus

musculus

A. Rationale

Wounds are injuries that causes the breakage of skin or other body tissues. They include

cuts, scrapes, scratches, and punctured skin. They often happen because of an accident, but

surgery, sutures, and stitches also cause wounds (effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov). The national

statistics showed that there is generally a decreasing trend of occupation injuries from 2011

(46,655 cases) to 2017 (38,235 cases). However, the occupational injuries generally increased

from 2011 (48,975 cases) to 2015 (20,961 cases). The most common cause from 2011 to 2017 is

temporary incapacity. Superficial injuries and open wounds were the most common, resulting in

workdays lost consistently from 2013 to 2017 (Statistics on Injury and Related Injuries in the

Philippines).

Malunggay, or also known as Moringa oleifera, has long been known for its traditional

medicinal as well as its industrial uses, and has been attributed with antibiotic and anti-

inflammatory properties. Studies revealed that topical application of its extracts promotes wound

healing (Caballero & Cachuela 2017). Studies revealed that applying Moringa oleifera extract on

wounds promotes the wound healing (Al-Ghanayem, Alhussaini, Asad, & Joseph 2022).

The goal of this study is to determine the effect of Malunggay Moringa Oleifera Leaf

Extract as a natural treatment and provide knowledge for its effectiveness on promoting the

healing effect of wounds in a simple, affordable, and accessible method for the people.
