MODULE 5

GEOMETRIC DESIGNS

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Present geometric concepts in describing and creating design;

2. Identify the kinds of geometric transformations.
3. Reflect on the importance of geometric designs in the enrichment of the Filipino
culture and arts

Geometric Shapes
It is a figure or area closed by a boundary which is created by combining the
specific amount of curves, points, and lines.
It is also a geometric information which remains when location, scale, orientation
and reflection are removed from the description of a geometric.

Kinds of Geometric Shapes

1.Square - is a four-sided figure which is created by connecting 4 line segments. The line
segments in the square are all of the equal lengths and they come together to form 4 right
angles.
2. Circle - another shape of geometry has no straight lines. It is rather a combination of
curves that are all connected. In a circle, there are no angles to be found.

3. Rectangle is created by connecting four line segments. The difference between a

square and a rectangle is that in a rectangle, there are two line segments which are longer
than the other two line segments.

4.Triangle - comprises three connected line segments.

 A scalene triangle has no congruent sides.

 An isosceles triangle has two congruent sides.

 An equilateral triangle has three congruent sides.

GEOMETRIC DESIGNS

5. Polygon
A polygon is made up of only lines and has no curves. It may not have any open parts. In
this case, a polygon is basically a broader term to several shapes such as a square,
triangle, and a rectangle.

Geometric transformation

is the process of using a set of control points and transformation equations to

register a digitized map, a satellite image, or an air photograph onto a projected
coordinate system

Types of Geometric Transformation

Any image in a plane could be altered by using different operations, or

transformations:
1.Translation is when we slide a figure in any direction.
2. Reflection is when we flip a figure over a line.
3. Rotation is when we rotate a figure a certain degree around a point.
4. Dilation is when we enlarge or reduce a figure

Geometric Patterns

It consists of series of shapes. Patterns made from shapes are similar to patterns
made from numbers because the pattern is determined by a rule and for the rule you can
continue the pattern.

SELF ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS

SAQ # 1: Is circle a polygon? Answer with a reason

SAQ # 2: What are the basic geometric shapes?

SAQ # 3: What is a polygon?

SAQ # 4: Name triangles on the basis of their sides?

SAQ # 5: What is the key property of a parallelogram?

ANSWER TO SELF ASSESSMENT

QUESTIONS

ASAQ #1 Circle is not a polygon since it is created using curves, something does not
adhere to the definition of a polygon.

ASAQ #2 The basic geometric plane shapes are circle, triangle, rectangle, rhombus,
square and trapezoid.

ASAQ #3 A polygon refers to a shape which is composed of mere lines. Moreover, it does
not have any open parts. It is generally a broader term to multiple shapes like the square,
triangle as well as a triangle.

ASAQ #4 Triangles on the basis of their sides are scalene , isosceles t and an equilateral
triangle. A scalene does not have any congruent sides while the isosceles triangle consists
of two congruent sides. Similarly, an equilateral one has three congruent sides. It is
important to note that equilateral and equiangular triangles are the two different terms we
use for the same triangle.

ASAQ #5 The main property of a parallelogram is that parallel lines do not cross or intersect

each other. Moreover, it does not matterRev
