A LESSON 1: PROPORTION

Definition
Proportion states that two ratios are equal.

The graph below shows ratios or rates that are proportional. Let us verify the
accuracy of proportions by checking the equality of ratios or rates.

BASIC PROPORTIONALLY THEOREM

If a line is parallel to a side of a triangle which intersects the other
sides into two distinct points, then the line divides those sides in proportion.

PROPORTION IN TRIANGLES
If the measures of the corresponding sides of two triangles are
proportional then the triangles are similar. Likewise, if the measures of two
sides in one triangle are proportion to the corresponding sides in another
triangle and the including angles are congruent then the triangles are similar.

PROPORTION IN TRIANGLES
Parts of two triangles can be proportional; If two triangles are known to
be similar then the perimeters are proportional to the measures of
corresponding sides. If two triangles are known to be similar then the
measures of the corresponding altitudes are proportional to the corresponding
sides.

The bisector of an angle in a triangle separates the opposite sides into two
segments that have the same ratio as the other two sides.

B LESSON 2: SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING PROPORTION

Steps in Solving Problems Involving Proportionality

1. Read and understand the given problem.

2. Form the proportion of the given ratios.
3. Apply the appropriate properties of proportion.
4. Find the missing term/s and simplify.
5. Check the answer with the original proportion.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 1
Find the missing term x in the given proportion 3 : x = 15 : 20.
ILLUSTRATIONS STEPS
3 : x = 15 : 20 Write the given proportion
3 15 Apply the Fundamental Rule of
= Proportion
𝑥 20

Lesson 1: Ma. Dolores J. Gregorio, Master Teacher I, Zamboanga City High School
Lesson 2: Rosemary B. Garcia, Head Teacher V, Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School

(3)(20) = (15)(x)
Apply the Cross – Multiplication Property
60 = 15x
and simplify both sides of the equation
15x = 60
15𝑥 60
= Simplify the equation and solve for x.
15 15
x=4
3:x = 15:20
3:4 = 15:20
3 15 Check the answer by substituting the
= values of x with the original proportion.
4 20
60 = 60

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 2
If 2 slices of egg pie cost ₱25, how many slices of egg pie can you buy for ₱75?
ILLUSTRATIONS STEPS
Let 𝒙 be the number of slices of egg pie.
Write the given proportion
2:25 = x:75
2 𝑥 Apply the Fundamental Rule of
=
25 75 Proportion

(2)(75) = (25)(x) Apply the Cross – Multiplication Property

150 = 25x and simplify both sides of the equation
25x = 150
25𝑥 150
= Simplify and solve for x.
25 25
x=6
2:25 = x:75
2:25 = 6:75
2 6 Check the answer by substituting the
= values of x with the original proportion.
25 75
150 = 150
Therefore, the 6 slices of egg pie can be bought for ₱75.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 3
If 𝑒 and 𝑏 represent two non-zero numbers, find the ration 𝑒: 𝑏 if 2𝑒 2 + 𝑒𝑏 − 3𝑏2 = 0.

SOLUTION:
2𝑒 2 + 𝑒𝑏 − 3𝑏2 = 0
(2𝑒 + 3𝑏)(𝑒 − 𝑏) = 0
2𝑒 + 3𝑏 = 0 𝑜𝑟 𝑒 − 𝑏 = 0

2𝑒 = −3𝑏 𝑒=𝑏

2𝑒 3𝑏 𝑒 𝑏
=− =
2𝑏 2𝑏 𝑏 𝑏
𝑒 3 𝑒 1
=− =
𝑏 2 𝑏 1

Hence, 𝑒: 𝑏 = −3: 2 or 1: 1

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 4
The organizer of a Boy Scout Jamboree bought 468 meters of rope to be used in the
camping. This rope is divided into 3 parts in the ratio 2: 3: 4. How long is each part?

SOLUTION:
Let 𝑟 be the size of each segment of the rope and 𝑥, 𝑦, and 𝑧 be the parts of the
𝑥 𝑦 𝑧
rope that is needed for the camping such that 𝑥: 𝑦: 𝑧 = 2: 3: 4. So, 2 = 3 = 4 = 𝑟 which
result to
𝑥 𝑦 𝑧
=𝑟 =𝑟 =𝑟
2 3 4
𝒙 = 𝟐𝒓 𝒚 = 𝟑𝒓 𝒛 = 𝟒𝒓

Since the sum of the length of the rope is 468 meters, we have,
𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 468
2𝑟 + 3𝑟 + 4𝑟 = 468
9𝑟 468
=
9 9
𝒓 = 𝟓𝟐
If each segment of the rope is equivalent to 52 meters, then,
𝑥 = 2𝑟 = 2(52) = 104 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠
𝑦 = 3𝑟 = 3(52) = 156 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠
𝑧 = 4𝑟 = 4(52) = 208 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠
