Learning Competencies and Objectives
The learners should be able to:

1. Create and interpret visual representation of the motion of objects such as tape charts and motion
graphs (S7FE-IIIb-3)

At the end of the session, students are expected to:

a) differentiate the motion of objects in terms of distance-time and velocity-time graph;
b) interpret the motion of an object as shown in the distance-time and velocity-time graph; and

will describe what the pictures refer to.

Key Questions:
1. What can you say on the first illustration?
Ans. The rabbit is faster than the hare.
2. How about the second illustration?

through choosing a graph which best interprets the segment.
• Immediate feedback will be given if their answers are right
or wrong.

Key Questions:
1. At what particular segment does the car accelerates?
Decelerates? Why?
(Answers depend on the segment shown)
2. At what particular segment is the car’s speed constant?
Why?
(Answers depend on the segment shown)

4. EXPLAIN (15 mins)

• Laptop/
To help the students build the concept/knowledge further, I will
be having a lecture about elements and compounds by Smartphone
explaining concepts and using the knowledge they gained from • Internet Connection
their experiences in the past activities. • Google meet
• PowerPoint Presentation
Describing the motion of an object is easier understood • Quarter 3: Module 3 (Motion and
through graphical presentations or use of diagrams. Herein, the Graph)
relationship of distance and time, speed or velocity and time are
interpreted easily when presented through graphs and diagrams.

Distance-Time Graph (d-t graph)
One way of describing motion is by plotting distance against
time in a Cartesian plane. Like in your mathematics class, this
presentation will make use of X and Y axis. (Graphs utilized in this
presentation are taken from
https://camillasenior.homestead.com/motion_graphs.pdf )

Time is plotted on
Y the X-axis. The
further to the right on
the axis, the longer
the time from the
start.

Distance is plotted
on the Y-axis. The
higher up the graph,
X
the further from the
Fig. 1: Distance-Time Graph start.

Object is at rest
An object is NOT
Y MOVING when a
horizontal line is shown
on a distance-time graph.

In this case, time is

increasing to the right,
but the distance remains
the same. The object is
X not moving hence, the
Fig. 2: Object is at Rest object is At Rest.

Object Moving at Constant Speed

An object is moving at a
Y constant speed when the
distance covered
increases constantly
with time.

Constant speed is shown

by straight lines on a
graph.
X

Y An object is NOT
MOVING when a
horizontal line is shown
on a distance-time graph.

5
In this case, time is
increasing to the right,
but the distance remains
the same. The object is
not moving hence, the
X object is At Rest.
Fig. 3: Object with Constant Speed

Suppose we have two moving objects:

Both of the lines in the graph show that each object moved the
same distance, but the steeper dashed line got there before the
other one:
The steeper dashed line
Y indicates that the object
has moved a greater
distance at a given time.
In other words, it has
higher speed than the
object which is
represented by the solid
line.
X
Fig. 4: Steeper Line Both lines are straight, so
both speeds are constant.
Below is a graph that show acceleration. It looks different from
those that show constant speed.
The line on this graph is
curving upwards. This
shows an increase in
speed since the line is
getting steeper.

In other words, the

object is accelerating.

Fig. 5. Curved line

Object Moving at Constant Speed
The figure shows an
Y object moving at a
constant speed. A
straight horizontal line
means that speed is
constant. It is not
changing over time.
X
Fig. 6: Constant Speed in Speed- A straight line, in this
Time Presentation case, does not mean that
the object is at rest.

6
Remember, this is a v-t
graph.
Object is Accelerating (Speeding Up)

The moving object is said

Y to be ACCELERATING
when its speed is
increasing as shown in the
graph.

X
Fig. 7. Accelerating Object

Object is Decelerating (Slowing Down)

Figure 8 shows that the

Y moving object is
decreasing its speed or
slowing down. Thus, the
moving object is
DECELERATING.

X
Fig. 8. Decelerating Object

Summary

A distance-time graph tells us how far an object has moved with

time.
o The steeper the graph, the faster the motion.
o A horizontal line means the object is not changing its position, it
is not moving, hence it is at rest.
o A downward sloping line means the object is returning to the start.

7
➢ A speed- time graph shows us how the speed of a moving object
changes with time.
o The steeper the graph, the greater the acceleration.
o A horizontal line means the object is moving at a constant speed.
o A downward sloping line means the object is slowing down.

You plan to buy a present or gift for your loved ones. Assume that
you are riding in a jeep, multicab, or taxi or even your own car or
vehicle.
Task:

a) Develop a motion (distance-time graph) from your home to

the mall that you would like to go or explore.
b) Describe your motion from one area to another
(Accelerating, decelerating, not moving)
c) Then compute the average speed. You can use a graphing
