RECAP

We have learned that the different forms of film such as action,

adventure, comedy, drama, historical, horror, musical, science fiction, and
fantasy can make a story interesting. In a film, conventions are used such
as lights, blocking, direction, set-up, and others to give more meaning to a
film or movie. These conventions are used to shape an image on how we
think about a character or event.

LESSON

Movies affect many of us powerfully because the combined impact of

images, music, dialogue, lighting, sound, and special effects can elicit deep
feelings and help us reflect on our lives, the lives of those around us, and
even how our society and culture operate. Many factors make movies
amazing.

Today, let us talk about the different forms and conventions of film and
moving pictures focusing on lights, blocking, direction, and set-up.

A. Lighting

What kind of atmosphere is created in a room lit by candles? Have

you ever heard of mood lighting? A room that is brightly lit by neon lights
might seem to be sterile. A shadow room might be eerie or scary. The
lighting technicians in a film crew have the task of creating lighting to suit
the mood in each.
Lighting is used to manipulate attitude towards a setting or a
character. The way light is used can make objects, people, and the
environment look beautiful or ugly, soft or harsh, artificial or real. Soft and
harsh lighting can manipulate a viewer’s attitude towards a setting or
character.

As an example on the next page, the house on the light is perceived as

quiet and friendly and it could easily be placed in a family comedy. However,
the lighting has been changed on the right and it turns into a dark and
gloomy house that could easily be placed into a drama, thriller, or horror.

Guided Practice 1

Let’s try this as our practice exercise:

Look at these images and describe what you feel.

A B

On the first frame, it shows a mysterious scene with people and their
shadows in a dark background.
On the second frame, it shows people in a happy mood set by the light
in the scene.
B. Blocking

Now, let’s talk about another convention of film and moving pictures. It
is called blocking. While lighting affects the mood of scenes in a film,
blocking makes the movement of the characters in a scene more effective.

Blocking is the arrangement of the position of characters in a film

sequence. The director tells the characters where they should be and how
they should position themselves.

Guided Practice 2
Look at the picture and describe how the blocking was made in the scene.

What did you observe? Yes! You are right, even though there are three
characters in one frame, all of them can be seen properly.

C. Direction

Another convention of film and moving pictures is direction. In

filmmaking, the director directs and controls all that goes into a film. He/
She is the leader who guides those involved in making the film.

Guided Practice 3

Do you remember your favorite movie? Recall a scene from that movie.
That scene from the movie that you recalled was executed well because it
was directed and controlled by a director.
D. Set-up

And now, the last convention of film and moving pictures that we will
discuss today is set-up. In filmmaking, a specific place that fits the scene is
chosen for the shoot to happen. This place is called a location. At other
times, an artificial backdrop is built to depict the necessary setting. This is
called a set. To get the best angle, the director or the director of photography
positions the camera and lighting on the right spot. This positioning of the
camera and lights is called set-up.

Set-up is also called set design. It refers to the creation of scenery

that depicts the “look” or physical appearance of the set for a film. Set-ups
or set designs communicate a sense of location and place. They are often
structured or built-in studios. They are also outside locations.

Guided Practice 4

Examine the following pictures. Identify the type of set-up that it shows.
Tell if it is a built-in studio or an outside location.

Picture 1

You are correct! It is a built-in studio.

Picture 2

Yes! You got it! That is an outside location.

Picture 3

Excellent! That is an outside location again.

ACTIVITIES

short bond paper that shows how to be safe during this time of pandemic.
Make sure to illustrate in your drawing the lighting, blocking of characters,
and set-up.
WRAP-UP

To wrap up the lesson we have discussed and learned today, let us

always remember that to communicate key messages to an audience,
producers of films use certain conventions and devices such as lights,
blocking, direction and set-up.

Conventions of Film

Lighting is used to manipulate attitude towards a setting or a

character. The way light is used can make objects, people, and the
environment look beautiful or ugly, soft or harsh, artificial or real.

Blocking refers to the positioning and movement of the actors in the

film sequence.

The director directs and controls all that goes into a film. He/ She is
the leader who guides those involved in making the film.

The set-up influences the interpretations of characters and

contributes to the atmosphere of the film.
