e) Stiff Ship
Q-3 Displacement 3-2-1-1.S

Light Displacement. -The displacement of a ship when she is floating at her designed light
draft. The weight of the hull, machinery spare parts and water in the boilers.
Righting Lever. -The perpendicular distance between the center of gravity and the vertical Each 4
line through the center of buoyancy. The lever on the ends of which the weight of the ship Marks
acts to return her to the upright when she is heeled.
Metacenter. -The point at which the vertical line through the center of buoyancy at a small
angle of heel, cuts the ship's center line. It is only considered to exist for angles of heel of
up to about 15 degrees.
Reserve Buoyancy. The volume of a ship's hull between the water plane and the freeboard
deck.
Stiff Ship. -A ship which has a large moment of statical stability. One having a large
metacentric height or righting lever.

Q2 A ship of 9500t displacement is listed 3.5 degrees to starboard, KM=9.5m, KG=9.3m

she then loads 300t of bunker in no.3 port DB, Kg=0.6m & 6.0m from centerline then
discharges two parcels of cargo each of 50t from the port side of no.2 tween deck,
Kg=11.0m & 5.0m from the centerline, find the final list?

Q A ship has an M.C.T. C. of 150 tonne- meters and floats at drafts of 6.00 meters forward
3 and 7.00 meters aft. How much water must be run into a tank, the center of gravity of
which is 50 meters forward of the center of flotation, to bring the ship to a trim of 20

Q A ship anchors off a Port, in salt water, with the upper edge of her Tropical load line 3 cm

above water. Her Tropical draft is 7.562 m; T.P.C is 22.54 t; F.W.A. is 153mm. She is to
discharge some cargo into lighters in order to enter a dock, where the density of the water
is 1.013 t/m3 and the depth on the dock sill is 7.70 m. Find the minimum amount of cargo
to discharge in order to cross the dock sill with a clearance of 20 cm, assuming that the
vessel remains on an even keel throughout?
